Grenen marks the junction between the Skagerrak Strait (part of the North Sea) and the Kattegat Sea, and the turbulent, colliding waters have created a 4 km long, curved sandbar extending eastward, both above and below the waves. The reef is still active and has grown approximately 1 km northeastward towards Sweden over the last century, resulting in an average annual growth rate of about 10 m. Due to the very strong currents, swimming there can be fatal and is prohibited in the waters around Grenen.

One foot in the North Sea and the other in the Baltic Sea!

Not only the lighthouse is worth seeing, but also the area north of it, where the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet. WW2 bunkers and nature. However, it's only sensible to cycle as far as the lighthouse.

A wonderful relic from earlier days, it's very popular today and can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. The stairs are quite narrow, so watch out for oncoming traffic.

Grenen is the northernmost point of Denmark, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas meet in a striking clash of waves. Visitors can stand with one foot in each sea, a unique experience at this dynamic sandbar. It’s also the dramatic endpoint of National Cycle Route 1, the Vestkystruten, which follows Denmark’s west coast. Swimming is prohibited due to strong currents, but the area is perfect for spotting seals and migratory birds.
