August 18, 2026, Herdersbrug Drawbridge on the Boudewijn Canal

The Blenheim R3896 memorial at Herdersbrug commemorates the three British crew members who lost their lives here on July 7, 1940. The British twin-engine bomber was on a reconnaissance flight over the ports of Zeebrugge and Ghent during the early months of World War II. On its way back to England, the aircraft was attacked and pursued by two German Messerschmitts. When the heavily damaged Blenheim caught fire, the then 19-year-old pilot Hugh C.M. Bamber saw that the plane was heading straight for the village center of Dudzele. In a final attempt to spare the inhabitants, he steered the aircraft away from the village and towards the Boudewijn Canal. The bomber crashed into the canal with a tremendous impact. None of the three crew members survived the crash. Their sacrifice likely prevented a much greater tragedy in Dudzele. This simple monument commemorates a particularly courageous act early in World War II. A small place with an impressive story.

Herdersbrug = Harbour Monument & Polder Gate Whether you're lucky and can pass smoothly, or have to wait a moment for the barriers: the Herdersbrug is an iconic landmark on this route! This impressive, movable bascule bridge spans the deep Boudewijn Canal and forms the gateway between the port of Zeebrugge and the tranquil polders of Dudzele. It's the perfect spot to take a break, admire the inland vessels passing by, or enjoy a drink at the terrace of the well-known brasserie right next to the bridge. A vibrant piece of Bruges' harbour infrastructure!
