The top section of this walk is on a main road, you have to walk on the verge. It's a lovely walk though! The dog loved it

Webb's Wood, just to the west of Swindon, is a Forestry England-owned woodland with two main bridleways running through it. It's a peaceful place, popular with dog walkers and good for spotting woodland wildflowers, birds and butterflies.

Open: Wed-Sun 10am-4pm. A beautifully located café with wooden decking platform and glass allowing you to observe the wildlife, while drinking a great warming coffee or tea (on a crisp winters day) and delicious home make cake. A real gem!

Best doing the route in the opposite direction to what I did, then this fun bit of downhill Forestry track, would be cheeky bit of excitement near the end of the ride.

Yes, there is a car park at the main entrance to the Ravensroost Wood nature reserve. Many walks, including the popular Ravensroost Nature Reserve loop, start directly from here, making it a convenient base for your hike.
Yes, dogs are welcome in Ravensroost Wood. However, as it is a nature reserve managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust with sensitive habitats and wildlife, it's important to keep your dog under close control at all times, and on a lead where signposted, especially around the wildflower meadows and ponds.
Absolutely. The area is known for its gentle, flat terrain. A great option for families is the Echo Lodge Meadows – Webb's Wood loop. It's a relatively short and easy walk that explores the lovely meadows and woodland adjacent to the main reserve.
Most trails are well-maintained and relatively flat. The main path through the woodland, known as the Jack Smith Ride, is surfaced, making it accessible in most weather. Other smaller paths can become muddy after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended, particularly in autumn and winter.
Each season offers a unique experience. Spring is wonderful for birdsong and bluebells. Summer brings the surrounding wildflower meadows into full bloom. Autumn is a fantastic time for fungi spotting, with over 450 species recorded in the wood. Winter offers crisp, quiet walks with sightings of birds like redwings and nuthatches.
Yes, the area is ideal for circular walks. You can find many loops that stay within the woodland and meadows. For a slightly longer but still very manageable option, consider the Sandpool Farm Nature Reserve loop from Oaksey, which takes you through the nearby reserve on very flat ground.
Ravensroost Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) celebrated for its biodiversity. In spring, listen for the drumming of great and lesser spotted woodpeckers. The area's eight ponds are home to various amphibians. The woodland is also a habitat for the Wild Service Tree, an indicator of ancient woodland.
While Ravensroost Wood itself is mostly flat, you can find longer routes by connecting to nearby areas. For a more substantial walk, the Cotswold Water Park Lake loop from Somerford Keynes is a moderate hike of about 14 km that explores the nearby lakes, offering a different type of scenery.
There are over 70 designated hiking routes to explore in and around Ravensroost Wood on komoot. They range from short, easy loops perfect for a quick stroll to longer, moderate trails connecting to the wider Cotswold Water Park area.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the peaceful atmosphere of the ancient woodland, the beauty of the wildflower meadows, and the well-marked, easy-to-follow paths. The abundance of wildlife and birdsong is another frequently mentioned highlight.
