The wall you see is not the city wall but a perfectly normal garden wall. On the other side, hidden in the houses, is the "real" wall.

A beautiful path along the old city wall, with various historic buildings. Durlach's first city wall was built in the 13th century. The adjacent sections of the city wall are about 200 years younger.

St. Nicholas Chapel is a building in Durlach (Basler-Tor-Straße 6) that is no longer used as a church. The first documented mention of a chapel on this site dates back to 1535. Following the relocation of the residence from Pforzheim to Durlach in 1565, the new Durlach cemetery was established around this first place of worship, in front of the Basler-Tor tower and thus outside the city gates. The cemetery adjacent to the city church had become too small. This cemetery was first documented in 1577. The chapel burned down in the great fire of Durlach in 1689. It was subsequently only provisionally rebuilt, and was subsequently destroyed again in a storm in 1711. Funded by donations from a collection and a house-to-house collection, the second reconstruction was completed the following year, designed by the architect Jakob Friedrich von Batzendorf. Batzendorf's plans called for a hall with a stable hipped roof, with the column-free roof truss having a span of 14 meters.

Durlach's only remaining city gate tower is still considered one of the landmarks of the former residence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach. Likely built in the 14th century, the tower once secured the southern entrance to the city and, like the three other former gates, was integrated into the city wall. In front of the gate was the outer bailey, the outer bailey wall, and the city moat with a drawbridge. A section of this wall and moat system has been preserved at the Basel Gate. The building with red shutters in front of the tower is the guardhouse, renovated in 1751, where the gatekeeper originally collected customs and tolls for goods imported into the city. The two sandstone pillars, crowned with spheres, mark the site of the former outer gate. On August 16, 1689, Durlach was almost completely burned down by French troops as a consequence of the War of the Palatine Succession. The Basel Gate also lost its roof in the fire. At the behest of the Margrave, it was rebuilt as a prison tower with the still-existing, solid vaults, the massive oak cell doors, and the external stair tower. The reconstruction, including the new roof truss in the form of a Welsche Haube (a type of onion dome), was finally completed in 1761.

The Obermühle in Karlsruhe-Durlach also houses a restaurant, which has been run by a new tenant since spring 2025. The restaurant has been tastefully refurbished, the service is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the food (German cuisine) is delicious. The beer garden is also cozy. The street is practically unnoticeable.
