Lovely, easy gravel paths. Can get busy at weekends with walkers etc, so can be a bit slow going. But early morning, weekdays etc usually all pretty good.

Woodford Lock is located on the River Nene in Northamptonshire. The lock is set in a picturesque rural landscape surrounded by lush countryside. It's one of several locks along the River Nene, allowing boats to navigate the varying water levels of the river.

Lovely garden out the back. Is at the bottom of quite a steep hill, so best served heading towards Ringstead once you have had your lunch.

Nice stop off for coffee, cake and meals set in a restored watermill. Plenty of outdoor seating by the river, bike-friendly!

You can't help but pass through the area on the way to Lyveden via a disused Railway Track. You can park there but there is a charge, which is why we park where the ride starts. However, there is a visitor centre there and you can get food and drink and toilets are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Kinewell Lake?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Kinewell Lake. However, as the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with important bird populations, it's recommended to keep dogs on a lead, especially during nesting seasons, to protect the local wildlife.

What are the parking options for Kinewell Lake?

There is a small, free car park located at the entrance to Kinewell Lake on Station Road. It can accommodate about 12-15 cars and tends to fill up quickly, so arriving early is a good idea. Some walks may also start from nearby villages which offer on-street parking.

Are the walking paths at Kinewell Lake suitable for prams or wheelchairs?

The main paths around the lake are generally flat and wide, making them suitable for sturdy prams. However, they are mostly gravel or natural surfaces which can become muddy and uneven after rain, potentially posing a challenge for wheelchairs and lighter pushchairs. The trails are not specifically designated as fully accessible.

How long does it take to walk around Kinewell Lake?

A full circuit of the lake itself is typically around 2.5 miles (4 km) and takes about an hour to walk at a leisurely pace. For a slightly different perspective, the Kinewell Lake loop from Great Addington offers a similar distance and easy terrain.

What is the best time of year for birdwatching at Kinewell Lake?

Kinewell Lake is a fantastic birdwatching spot year-round due to its status as a Special Protected Area. You can see species like Grebes and Cormorants throughout the year. For a special sight, visit during the migration seasons to potentially see large flocks of pink-footed geese.

Are there any good walks for families with young children?

The flat, circular paths around the lake are ideal for family outings. For a route that combines the lake with other nearby points of interest, consider the Stanwick Lakes Bird Hide loop from Great Addington. It's an easy walk that offers plenty of waterside scenery to keep children engaged.

How do the walks at Kinewell Lake compare to Stanwick Lakes?

Kinewell Lake offers a more tranquil, nature-focused experience on a smaller scale, centered around a single lake and the River Nene. Stanwick Lakes is a much larger complex with more extensive facilities, playgrounds, and a wider network of trails connecting multiple lakes. For a route that lets you experience both, the Stanwick Lakes Bird Hide loop from Ringstead is a moderate trail connecting the two areas.

What are the trail conditions like?

Most trails are well-maintained gravel or dirt paths that are generally flat and easy to walk on. However, sections closer to the River Nene and in wooded areas can become quite muddy, especially after periods of rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended.

Are there any pubs or cafes along the walking routes?

Yes, there are a couple of convenient options. The Axe & Compass pub in Ringstead is a popular starting or finishing point for a walk. Additionally, the Water Mill Tea Rooms (formerly Woodford Mill) are located about two-thirds of the way around the main circular route, offering a charming spot for a break.

The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Reviewers often praise the peaceful waterside scenery, the abundance of birdlife, and the easy, accessible nature of the flat trails that make it a relaxing place for a walk.

Are there any more challenging hikes available near Kinewell Lake?

While the immediate lake area is known for its flat, easy trails, you can find more varied terrain by extending your route. The region has over 10 routes rated as difficult by the komoot community. These longer hikes often link up with sections of the Nene Way and explore the wider Northamptonshire countryside.

What historical points of interest can I see on a walk?

The most notable historical feature is the Willy Watt Mill, also known as Woodford Mill, which you can see along the main circular path. The nearby lock on the River Nene also offers a glimpse into the area's industrial and waterway heritage.
