Tips from the Community

February 27, 2026, Lake Apopka Restoration Area

Too many alligators on both sides of the trail. A gravel bike or gravel tires and full suspension would be better for bumpy rough areas. Otherwise, it is a nice ride with beautiful scenery and a large variety of birds.

The pump house is unfortunately closed and cannot be visited. There are restrooms outside. There is a small covered picnic area with a view of the wildlife.

The historic town of Winter Garden holds many hidden treasures wrapped in its small town Florida charm. There are stories of train workers spitting tomato seeds into the soil and to their surprise it plants would grow even in the winter. Hence, the name: Winter Garden.

If you’re looking for a unique and educational attraction near Orlando, Florida, don’t miss the Lake Apopka Historical Pump House, located along the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. This old pump house was used to drain and irrigate the farmland that once covered the north shore of Lake Apopka, Florida’s fourth-largest lake. The pump house is a reminder of the history of the lake, which was severely polluted by agricultural runoff and became known as Florida’s most polluted large lake. The pump house is now part of the St. Johns River Water Management District’s efforts to restore the lake and its wetlands, as well as to enhance wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities.
