Occasionally, in the depiction of the cross in such a Calvary chapel, one will see not only the familiar INRI inscription above Jesus' head, but also a skull at his feet. Influenced by corresponding adventure films in cinema and television, we know this symbol primarily as the flag on pirate ships. The Christian background of this symbol – perhaps not so well known to the observer lingering here – is explained by Brother Franziskus Joest in „Fulfilled is the Time – The Gospel of Mark as an Annual Companion“ as follows: + „It is the head of Adam. According to an old legend, Golgotha [the place of Jesus' crucifixion] was the hill under which Adam had lain buried since time immemorial. Of course, this is not historically comprehensible in any way, but it nevertheless contains a deep truth. For through the death of Jesus, humanity is redeemed, Adam's curse and separation from God are abolished, and sin, death, and the devil are conquered. The blood flowing from the cross touches Adam's skull in the pictorial representations [often seen on icons of the Eastern Church with the motif of Jesus' crucifixion] and thus indicates that he too participates in redemption, and that all of humanity, which has fallen in him, is set upright again through the cross.“

Insider tips in Berchtesgaden include the Almbach Gorge, the Marktschellenberg Ice Cave, the Maria Gern pilgrimage church, and the Rothbach Falls. A ride on the Jennerbahn cable car for panoramic views is also recommended, as is a hike through the Klausbach Valley with its suspension bridge or a tour to the Rotspielscheibe. Local experiences like the Grassl mountain distillery with gentian tasting or cozy mountain huts like the Kührointhütte are also worth a visit.

Königssee is a mountain lake located largely within Berchtesgaden National Park. Nestled between the steep slopes of the Watzmann and Hagen Mountains, this elongated lake, along with the smaller Obersee lake to the southeast—around which the Steinernes Meer forms the valley's edge—has a fjord-like character. From the Königssee parking lot, a path leads past picturesque boathouses into the national park. Past the former Café Malerwinkl, the walk leads to the so-called Malerwinkel (Painter's Corner). This hike is also very popular as a winter walk, as the path to Malerwinkl is cleared and gritted during these times.
