The ruins of Beeks Place are the remains of old stone buildings built in the 1930's by Joseph Beeks (who created the Balboa Island Ferry service in Newport Beach) to use as a weekend getaway. Located right along Main Divide road, it makes for a nice place to take a break and take in the views.

Maple Springs Trailhead is found at the end of Silverado Canyon Road, in Cleveland National Forest. The gate will be closed at times of high fire risk or bad weather. Maple Springs Road is initially paved (with some potholes) but gives way to a dirt road. It's exposed, hot and you'll likely be sharing the route with 4x4 / motocross bikes - my recommendation, don't argue about right of way, just give way. And bring your own water!

Remains of an old Native American Village. The holes in the rocks are what's left of where women would pound acorn meats into a workable flour.

Yes, the hike to the seasonal Black Star Canyon Falls is a well-known local adventure. The trail involves a mix of flat walking and then scrambling through a creek bed to reach the falls. The waterfall is most impressive after recent rainfall, so plan your visit accordingly for the best experience.
For a family outing, consider the Dreaded Hill loop in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. It's a moderate loop that offers a good sense of adventure without being overly strenuous. The varied scenery helps keep younger hikers engaged. Always check trail conditions before heading out with children.
While most trails in the area are rated as moderate due to the rugged canyon terrain, there are a few easier options. The initial sections of many canyon trails, like the fire road in Black Star Canyon, are relatively flat and suitable for beginners looking for a gentle introduction to hiking in Silverado.

Parking can be limited, especially on weekends. For popular spots like the Maple Springs Trailhead, you will likely need an Adventure Pass. These can often be purchased for a small fee at local markets on your way into the canyon. It's wise to arrive early to secure a spot and always park in designated areas.

The diverse habitats, from riparian corridors to chaparral, support this biodiversity. Always observe wildlife from a safe and respectful distance.
