This challenging mountain bike loop takes you on a dramatic journey from the coastal serenity of the Andree Clark Bird Refuge to the rugged heights of La Cumbre Peak. You'll start or finish on a paved path circling a saltwater marsh, offering views of East Beach and opportunities for birdwatching, before ascending into the demanding terrain of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Expect steep climbs, technical descents with loose rocks, and sections where you might need to push your bike, all rewarded with expansive panoramic views from the summit.

To tackle this difficult 33.2-mile (53.4 km) route with 4718 feet (1438 metres) of elevation gain, plan for approximately 4 hours and 17 minutes of riding. The "Zoo Train" area serves as a common starting point, so look for parking nearby. It's best to begin early in the morning to make the most of the day and avoid the heat, especially during warmer months. This is a serious undertaking for experienced riders, so come prepared with plenty of water and a well-maintained bike.

What makes this loop stand out is its incredible transition from urban coastal wetlands to high mountain wilderness, offering a comprehensive Santa Barbara experience. The Andree Clark Bird Refuge is a haven for over 200 bird species, while La Cumbre Peak provides amenities like picnic tables and restrooms at its 3,997-foot (1,218-meter) summit. This route is a favorite among local mountain bikers for its diverse ecosystems and the sheer physical and technical challenge it presents.

The Gibraltar Road loop from Zoo Train offers a quintessential Santa Barbara mountain biking experience, blending demanding climbs with breathtaking coastal panoramas. You'll navigate through dry, brushy hillsides, with the terrain constantly shifting to keep you engaged. The higher you ascend, the more expansive the views become, revealing the Santa Barbara Channel and the distant Channel Islands, making every challenging pedal stroke worthwhile.

This difficult 28.3-mile (45.5 km) route, with its 3784 feet (1153 metres) of elevation gain, is a serious undertaking that typically takes around 3 hours and 33 minutes. Be sure to carry ample water, as there are no resupply points until Painted Cave Road, and summer heat can be intense. While the main Gibraltar Road is well-paved, some descents, particularly if you venture onto fire roads, can be technical and require strong bike handling skills.

Gibraltar Road is renowned as one of Southern California's most iconic and challenging climbs, often compared to the 'Alp d'Huez of Santa Barbara.' This loop provides a fantastic opportunity to experience its legendary status, offering a rewarding sense of accomplishment and unparalleled vistas from viewpoints like La Cumbre. It's an advanced mountain biking route that promises an epic adventure for those with the fitness and confidence to tackle it.

January 25, 2025, Inspiration Point Trail

Although this hike starts in a residential neighborhood, it quickly heads up into the hills to provide positively inspiring — get it? — views of the Santa Barbara coastline. The trail is rocky, so it's not boring — and even with a little shade in the steepest parts of the trail, you may want to save this one for a cooler part of the day.

Nice view over Los Padres National Forest. The climb up to the peak is challenging, but it is worth the effort for the great vistas.

Though the trail to the summit stays largely exposed, the spectacular vistas make the run well worth it. Despite the route's popularity, arriving early allows joggers to soak up the sights solo before the crowds arrive.
