Cycle through the remote Sonoran Desert on The Road To Nowhere (Sun Valley Parkway), a route defined by its vast, undeveloped landscape and quiet stretches of highway. You'll find continuous, expansive views of natural desert vistas, including creosote, mesquite, palo verde, and various cacti, creating an immersive natural experience. The terrain is mostly well-paved, four-lane highway with wide shoulders, offering ample space for a moderate 72.8-mile (117.1 km) ride with 893 feet (272 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 31 minutes.

Planning your ride requires self-sufficiency, as there are no services, shade, or good resting spots along the majority of the route. Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and repair supplies for this remote journey. No permits or fees are needed to cycle the parkway itself, but always consider the desert climate and plan your visit for cooler times of day or year.

This route earned its nickname because it was built between 1988 and 1989 as a major thoroughfare for anticipated development that never fully materialized, leaving a massive, underutilized road through the desert. This history contributes to its appeal for cyclists, providing a lengthy, remote, and low-traffic route ideal for uninterrupted riding through the unique Arizona landscape.

The Peoria to Lake Pleasant loop offers a fantastic road cycling experience through the heart of the Sonoran Desert, showcasing expansive views and vibrant desert flora, particularly in spring. As you pedal, you'll transition from the flatter terrain near Peoria into gradual inclines and sustained climbs, especially noticeable on New River Road, before being rewarded with picturesque vistas of Lake Pleasant. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like wild burros and roadrunners as you navigate the well-paved surfaces.

This moderate 58.3-mile (93.8 km) route involves a significant 1925 feet (587 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 8 minutes to complete. It's best tackled during the cooler months to avoid the intense Arizona summer heat. You'll find convenient amenities, including water and restrooms, at Rio Vista Community Park, making it a good spot for a mid-ride break.

Beyond the main loop, this route connects with or runs near other multi-use pathways like portions of the Arizona Trail and Maricopa Trail, offering options for extended exploration if you're looking for more miles. While Castle Hot Springs Road is nearby, be aware that it quickly turns to dirt, making it unsuitable for road bikes. Exposed and hot, but flat and fast if the wind is at your back

The canal path is a mix of paved and crushed gravel. Pretty much all of it is rideable on a road bike as it's flat and well packed.

Lakeview Day Use area has a number of picnic sites, restrooms and access to the Pipeline Canyon & Wild Burro Trails. While there is no guarantee that you'll see actual wild burro, it's not an uncommon occurrence either.

Rio Vista is a great park with plenty of places to play & relax. If you're feeling particularly hot you could cool down in the splash park, or get some shade and lunch in a picnic area. If you're on a family ride you can stop at the playground or try your luck in the fishing pond.

There is nothing out here, and that's what makes it great. This is a case of anti "Field Of Dreams", they built it, but nobody came. You have 30 miles of 4 lane highway that was supposed to be a major thoroughfare as the Phoenix Metro area expanded, but that's just not how things worked out. Instead there's a massive road with wide shoulders that gives riders more than enough room to feel comfortable. However, this also means you won't be finding much help if things go wrong so be sure to bring more than enough water and supplies for the ride.

October 17, 2023, Arizona Falls

Arizona Falls began life as a man-made waterfall in the late 1800's when the Salt River was diverted to the Arizona Canal for irrigation. By the turn of the century hydro-electric power was being generated here and the power station was in operation until being shut down in 1950. After decades of neglect the area was refurbished into a park and new generators were installed to make it operational again. It's definitely worth a stop if you're passing by.

At this day use area there's a parking lot, toilets available, and a covered bench to take a rest while looking at the landscape. Here is the starting point to Wild Burro Trail and also can be the end or start of Pipeline Trail.
