Exposed and hot, but flat and fast if the wind is at your back

The canal path is a mix of paved and crushed gravel. Pretty much all of it is rideable on a road bike as it's flat and well packed.

October 20, 2023, Lakeview Day Use Area

Lakeview Day Use area has a number of picnic sites, restrooms and access to the Pipeline Canyon & Wild Burro Trails. While there is no guarantee that you'll see actual wild burro, it's not an uncommon occurrence either.

Rio Vista is a great park with plenty of places to play & relax. If you're feeling particularly hot you could cool down in the splash park, or get some shade and lunch in a picnic area. If you're on a family ride you can stop at the playground or try your luck in the fishing pond.

There is nothing out here, and that's what makes it great. This is a case of anti "Field Of Dreams", they built it, but nobody came. You have 30 miles of 4 lane highway that was supposed to be a major thoroughfare as the Phoenix Metro area expanded, but that's just not how things worked out. Instead there's a massive road with wide shoulders that gives riders more than enough room to feel comfortable. However, this also means you won't be finding much help if things go wrong so be sure to bring more than enough water and supplies for the ride.

October 17, 2023, Arizona Falls

Arizona Falls began life as a man-made waterfall in the late 1800's when the Salt River was diverted to the Arizona Canal for irrigation. By the turn of the century hydro-electric power was being generated here and the power station was in operation until being shut down in 1950. After decades of neglect the area was refurbished into a park and new generators were installed to make it operational again. It's definitely worth a stop if you're passing by.

At this day use area there's a parking lot, toilets available, and a covered bench to take a rest while looking at the landscape. Here is the starting point to Wild Burro Trail and also can be the end or start of Pipeline Trail.
