Tips from the Community

Togro
March 24, 2026, Dömitz Bridge Memorial

This monument is located directly at the intersection of the B 191 and the B 195, about one kilometer east of the current Elbe bridge. It consists of an original pillar and a steel segment several meters long from the old road bridge from 1936. It commemorates the destruction of the first road bridge by a US air raid on April 20, 1945. As the bridge lay directly on the border during the division of Germany, it was never repaired.

The Dömitz Elbe Bridge is a remarkable engineering feat. Here, you can see the bridge's cross-section in its original size. It also features a well-located parking area, ideal as a starting point for tours.

Here, Federal Highway 195 crosses the Elde River. The bridge can be raised if necessary (for larger boats to pass through). On the south side of the bridge is the Dömitz harbor, and a little further south, the Elde flows into the Elbe.

Dömitz is very beautiful and highly recommended as a starting point for cycling tours. We parked in the motorhome area at the hotel.
