Silver Lake 🐟

Highlight • Lake

Silver Lake is a stunning alpine lake on Carson Pass Highway (SR 88). Situated along one of the historic immigrant trails to California across the Sierra Nevada used by many settlers and gold miners since the 1840s, soon residents of the central valley flocked to the mild climates of the mountains in the summer, often setting up tent camps that stood for months. Many of the lodges and camps at Silver Lake were established in the 1920s, while Plasse's dates back to 1853.

Several of the old resorts still operate today, offering modernized accommodations and countless amenities.
Anglers, hikers, photographers, artists, birdwatchers, and nature lovers enjoy exploring the lake and its surrounding countryside. A modern launch ramp makes boating easy.

Loon Lake

Highlight • Lake

Loon Lake Reservoir is a reservoir in the Eldorado National Forest of El Dorado County, California, United States. The 76,200 acre·ft (94,000,000 m3) lake is formed by Loon Lake Dam, completed in 1963 as part of the Upper American River Project by Sacramento Municipal Utility District to conserve spring snow melt runoff for use during the summer and autumn for hydroelectric power production. Loon Lake Dam impounds water at the headwaters of Gerle Creek which, prior to the dam, flowed intermittently through (natural) Loon and Pleasant Lakes. But most of the water now stored in Loon Lake Reservoir arrives from Buck Island Reservoir in the adjacent Rubicon River watershed by way of the Buck-Loon Tunnel. Nearby is Loon Lake Chalet, a popular winter recreation destination. In summer, a boat ramp for water sports and camping are available, but the area is less popular than nearby Union Valley Reservoir and Rubicon Trail.

It is popularly referred to as Loon Lake, although strictly speaking this is the name of the former lake now inundated by the dam. Boaters still refer to the northeast portion of the reservoir as the Pleasant Lake Arm, the portion over the inundated Pleasant Lake.

The Rubicon Trail is a famously challenging, 22-mile-long route, part road and part 4x4 trail, located in the Sierra Nevada of the western United States, due west of Lake Tahoe and about 80 miles (130 km) east of Sacramento.

The western maintained portion of the route is called the Wentworth Springs Road; it begins in Georgetown, California, a hamlet in California's Gold Country. The road continues from its intersection with State Route 193 towards Wentworth Springs, where the trailhead for the unmaintained portion of the route exists adjacent to Loon Lake. The trail portion of the route is about 12 miles (19 km) long and passes in part through the El Dorado National Forest as well as the Tahoe National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The eastern maintained portion of the trail is called the McKinney Rubicon Springs Road, and leads to Lake Tahoe.

The PCT here passes the tiny Frog Lake, that can still be under snow early in the season.
