It is 179 meters long, and its two diagonally positioned pylons are 60 meters high and together support 30 steel cables. The bridge faces directly toward Mariánská skála (Mary's Rock). The architect was Roman Koucký, born in 1959.

During the reign of Emperor Joseph II, Terezín was built as a fortress starting in 1780. At the same time, the monarch also had the Josefstadt Fortress built in Bohemia (later named after him). The Terezín Fortress was intended to protect the northwestern approaches to Bohemia from military attacks from Prussia. Together with Leitmeritz (Litoměřice), it secured the river crossings over the Elbe and Eger. The city was named after Maria Theresa, the mother of Joseph II.
