The summit is located just outside the parking lot. It is a steep hill to the top where you can overlook the valley (unless it’s super foggy)

The peak sits at 6,684 feet and is surrounded by hiking trails, scenic driving and biking roads, picnic areas, and campgrounds. Black Mountain Campground is a seasonal campground in Pisgah National Forest with toilets, showers, tent pads, and a camp store. Along with camping, the area boasts plentiful parking, fishing access, and access to hiking trails. All campsites have to be reserved through the Forest Service. The paved road leads to the campground entrance, but there is also a forest road to the southwest (South Toe River Road), which offers the ability to make some awesome gravel riding loops.

If attempting to do the Black Mountain Crest Trail (aka, Deep Gap Trail) in its entirety, this is the parking area to leave a second car. There is no actual shuttle for this hike to take you back to your starting point, but having someone pick you up here works as your own, personal shuttle. You can leave your car parked up here overnight, but you can not camp in this area.

Just down the road from Spivey Gap Trailhead is Spivey Gap Recreation Area, which offers camping amenities. The parking at Spivey Gap Trailhead is just some pull-off spaces on the side of the road. The Appalachian Trail climbs from the road in both directions from here.

The Black Mountain Crest Trail is an ~11 mile trail journeying from Bowlens Creek to the summit of Mount Mitchell. You can do the trail as an out-and-back in one big push, as an overnight backpacking trip, or as a point-to-point by getting a ride at the top or parking a car at the summit parking lot. The trail begins on an old forest road after crossing a creek (either getting your feet wet or crossing an old, rickety bridge). There are limited parking spots near the start. Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. You can plan to cross over several 6,000 foot peaks during your trek from here to the high point.

Yes, there are several great options for families. The Roaring Fork Falls Trail is a very popular choice, offering a gentle 1.3-mile (2.1 km) walk to a beautiful 100-foot waterfall. Another excellent, short hike is the Balsam Nature Trail loop, a self-guided trail near the summit of Mount Mitchell, which is notable for being one of the highest trails east of the Mississippi.
Yancey County is home to some stunning waterfalls accessible by trail. The Crabtree Falls Trail loop is a must-do, leading to the picturesque 70-foot Crabtree Falls. The trail itself is a moderately challenging 2.5-mile (4 km) loop located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Most trails in Pisgah National Forest and on the Blue Ridge Parkway are dog-friendly, provided your dog is on a leash no longer than six feet. However, dogs are not permitted on some specific trails within Mount Mitchell State Park, such as the Balsam Nature Trail. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to hike.
For a strenuous challenge, the Woody Ridge Trail is a formidable option. It's known for its steepness, gaining over 3,000 feet (914 m) in elevation in just a few miles. It's a tough climb that rewards experienced hikers with a true sense of accomplishment.
The weather can change very quickly at high elevations. Even on a warm day, it can be significantly cooler and windier at summits like Mount Mitchell. Always carry layers of clothing, plenty of water, and a map. Be prepared for rugged terrain and check the weather forecast specifically for the higher elevations before you go.
Hiking is possible year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring brings blooming wildflowers, while summer offers lush green forests, though it can be hazy. Autumn is spectacular, with vibrant fall foliage, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Winter can be beautiful but requires caution, as trails and the Parkway can be closed due to ice and snow.
