October 22, 2023, Gold Mint Trail

The first mile of the Gold Mint Trail is a roomy gravel path, but quickly turns into a dirt singletrack route. It is a steady climb with some rocky sections. This trail provides excellent views of the surrounding valley and impressive Talkeetna Mountains. The Gold Mint Trail is frequently accessed by hikers, and riders should be alert for pedestrian travel. Check Hatcher Pass avalanche information before enjoying the trail.

The heavily-wooded Kincaid Park covers 1,400 acres and boasts 20 miles of single-track bike runs. This park is a popular option for outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to the Cook Inlet and the incredible mountain panorama viewed from this point. Moose and black bears are frequently sighted in Kincaid Park.

This is the start of the Eklutna Lakeside Trail, which runs for miles along the aforementioned lake. The trail is actually an old road, and motorized traffic (ATVs and snowmachines, depending on trail conditions) is allowed Sunday through Wednesday. You can still bike on those days, and there are a few cutoffs that are only open to non-motorized traffic and offer you chances at a quieter ride. However, the cutoffs are frequently eroded and washed out.

This primitive campsite makes a logical turnaround point if you're just out for the day, or an overnight location if you're on a bikepacking trip. Make sure you don't set up camp on the airstrip itself; it may still be used by small planes.

This is a very popular hiking trail, but you can also bike it. (Travel is allowed in both directions). The remote location and heavy forest makes unexpected wildlife encounters quite possible, so make sure you're prepared to handle bear, moose, and other wildlife encounters. In the winter, you might swap your usual mountain bike out for a fat tire bike or a set of skis.

This is the start of the Crevasse Moraine trail system β€” a series of swooping, non-technical loops that are fun to bike. During the winter you'll want a fat-tire bike for negotiating the packed-down snow, or if the snow gets too soft you might trade your bike in for a set of skis. Although the loop trails of Crevasse Moraine are a full destination in and of themselves, there's also a connecting trail that takes you south to Long Lake, Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area, and other components of the Matanuska Greenbelt.

Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area is just one part of the huge swath of green space known as the Matanuska Greenbelt. There are several trailheads accessible to the south of Long Lake, a loop trail around Long Lake itself, and tie-ins with other parts of the Matanuska Greenbelt trail system, including the Crevasse Moraine trail system to the north.
