The 445-hectare Mount Pisgah Conservation Area is owned by the Kennebec Land Trust. The property on the forested summit (246 m) with the Mount Pisgah Fire Tower belongs to the city of Winthrop. The former Maine Forest Service fire tower was in operation from 1949 to 1991 and is open to the public. The tower offers a spectacular panoramic view; on a clear day you can see Mount Washington in the White Mountains to the west and the Camden Hills to the east. https://www.tklt.org/pisgah

Vaughan Brook is a stream in the town of Hallowell, Maine. The nearby Cascade Pond is a result of the dammed Vaughan Brook just before the river becomes smaller and floats through the Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead Nature Preserve. The hiking trails in the area partly lead along the river and are located in beautiful nature.

Yes, the region is great for families. A particularly popular choice is the Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead loop, often called 'Hobbitland' for its charming stone bridges and waterfalls. Another excellent option is the gentle Viles Arboretum loop, which is suitable for all fitness levels.
Many trails in Kennebec County are dog-friendly, but policies can vary. It's common for dogs to be required to be on a leash, especially in popular areas like the Kennebec Highlands and land trust properties. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to visit and be prepared to clean up after your pet.
For panoramic views, the hike up Mount Pisgah is a local favorite. The Mount Pisgah loop via Blueberry & Tower Trails leads to a fire tower at the summit, offering expansive vistas on a clear day. For beautiful lake views without a major climb, consider the trails around French Mountain.
Vaughan Woods in Hallowell is well-known for its picturesque waterfalls along the brook. For a more dramatic waterfall, a short and easy trail leads to Moxie Falls, one of Maine's highest waterfalls, located just outside the county but a worthwhile trip for those in the northern part of the region.
Kennebec County has many excellent loop trails. The Sanders Hill Trail loop offers a great circuit through the Kennebec Highlands. For a shorter loop with lake views, the Mount Philip loop from Rome Corner is a fantastic choice.
Most popular trail systems, such as those in the Kennebec Highlands and at Mount Pisgah, have designated parking areas. For example, Vaughan Woods Trailhead Parking is a well-regarded starting point. However, lots can be small and fill up quickly on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
Yes, the Kennebec River Rail Trail is a highly-regarded paved path that stretches for 6.5 miles from Augusta to Gardiner. It's perfect for walking, running, or cycling and offers lovely views along the river.
The Kennebec Highlands is a large public land area with a network of trails through forests and over low mountains. Yes, many trails are accessible for winter hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Places like Bond Brook Recreation Area and Quarry Road Trails are popular for winter activities. Always wear appropriate gear, such as microspikes for icy conditions, and check trail conditions before you go as they will not be cleared.
The forests and wetlands of Kennebec County are home to a variety of wildlife. It's common to see white-tailed deer, squirrels, and numerous bird species, including loons on the lakes. If you're quiet, you might also spot a fox, porcupine, or even a moose. Swan Island Wildlife Management Area is a particularly good spot for wildlife viewing.

The variety of hikes, from easy family walks to more rewarding summit climbs, is also a frequently mentioned highlight.
The vast majority of hiking trails, including those in the Kennebec Highlands Public Reserved Land and on Kennebec Land Trust properties, are free to access.
