Tips from the Community

Oxford is one of Maryland's oldest towns, founded in 1683. It first appeared on maps in 1670. Located on the Tred Avon River, where it empties into the Choptank, the town has wonderful views over the water. You'll find plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to pick up supplies and refuel on a bike ride. It's also a lovely town just to lose yourself in for a while.

Miles River is a tidal river and tributary of the Eastern Bay. Part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, it's one of the area's busiest waterways, enjoyed by many boaters. The river flows for 12.9 miles (20.8 km).

On the southern tip of Tilghman Island, this wildlife area has fantastic views across the Chesapeake Bay. Look to the skies and you'll spot many birds, including perhaps ospreys and bald eagles who nest in the area. The park is open from 9 am until 5 pm daily.

Hooper Strait Light is quite a rare sight in Maryland. It's one of only four surviving screw-pile lighthouses on Chesapeake Bay. Lightships were first stationed here in 1827. However, in 1867, a square screw-pile was erected after the lightships were destroyed during the Civil War. The light was deactivated in 1966. Today, it serves as an exhibit of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

This park celebrates Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and Underground Railroad activist. You can learn about her life and work at a museum and enjoy the nature of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge nearby afterward. The park is open from 10am until 4pm Tuesday until Sunday.

This beautiful little school is the only one still standing of the more than forty that were similar. It was in use until the late 1960s.
