The organ goes back to an instrument built in 1860 by the organ builder Per Larsson Åkerman. Pipe material from this instrument is still available, as well as the magnificent organ case. In 2011 the instrument was reorganized. It has 45 registers on three manual works and pedal. The key action is mechanical (main and swell works are equipped with Baker machines), the stop action is electric.

The cathedral, however, consists only of a wide nave, which seemed better suited for the sermons of the Reformation. The current pulpit and altar were created after a fire in 1693. Although Mariestad is no longer a bishop's seat today, the church is still referred to as a cathedral.
