Down a short, out-and-back spur trail off of the main Grandfather Trail and just below Calloway Peak, is an amazing overlook. From here you get great views over the mountains. This is a great detour before or after you summit.

Home to one of the most popular sunrise viewing areas on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway, the Thunder Hill Overlook is located at Milepost 290.4 and rests at an elevation of 3,795 feet. The overlook boasts a pretty big parking area (no picnic tables, though) and a wide open view. This viewpoint is a nice change of pace from a lot of the overgrown overlooks along this part of the parkway.

The Moses Cone Manor and Estate can be found within Moses H. Cone Memorial Park near Milepost 294 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can't bike on the trails or carriage roads on the property, but it's still worth stopping at and checking out. You get great views of the mountains surrounding Blowing Rock, and there's plenty of history to explore in and around the structures.

Yes, the area offers several gentle trails perfect for families and beginners. The Bass Lake Loop – Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is a very popular, flat one-mile walk around a scenic lake. For a slightly longer but still easy option, the Price Lake Loop – Julian Price Memorial Park provides a beautiful 2.2-mile circuit with minimal elevation change.
For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, Grandfather Mountain State Park offers some of the most rugged terrain in the South. Trails here often involve steep ascents, ladders, and cables across exposed ridges. A strenuous but rewarding option is the Calloway Peak via Nuwati & Daniel Boone Scout Trail loop, which climbs over 1,970 feet (600 m) to the highest point in the park.
Definitely. Watauga County is known for its beautiful cascades. A great option is the Boone Fork Trail to Hebron Falls, a moderate hike that leads to a series of cascades tumbling over large boulders. Another local favorite is the Glen Burney Trail — Blowing Rock, which descends into a gorge to reveal three distinct waterfalls.
Most trails in Watauga County are dog-friendly, but they must be kept on a leash. The wide carriage trails in Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, such as the Flat Top Mountain Trail, are excellent for walking with dogs. However, be aware that dogs are not permitted on the backcountry ladder trails within Grandfather Mountain State Park for safety reasons.
Winter hiking can be beautiful but requires preparation. Higher elevation trails, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway and on Grandfather Mountain, can be icy and snowy. The Parkway itself often closes sections to vehicles, so you may need to check for access. Lower elevation trails like the Greenway Trail to Kennedy Trail loop in Boone are often more accessible. Always wear appropriate footwear with good traction, such as microspikes, and dress in layers.
Yes, there are several excellent loop trails that bring you back to your starting point without retracing your steps. The Green Knob Trail loop is a pleasant 2.3-mile (3.7 km) hike with moderate elevation gain and views of Grandfather Mountain. For a longer, more varied experience, the Hebron Colony Falls – View of Price Lake loop offers a 7-mile (11.3 km) journey through forests and past waterfalls.
