The Cascades Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Not even a mile roundtrip, a visit to The Cascades is worthwhile for anyone near the Boone area. The most popular route is a short trail route leaving from the parking lot at Milepost 272.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The falls are the main attraction in the area, but the picnic area near the parking lot stays busy as well. Refrain from climbing on the rocks near the falls, as people have died here from slipping and falling.

Lewis Fork Overlook

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Lewis Fork Overlook is not one of the most popular stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway simply because of how overgrown it has become. This viewpoint at Milepost 270.2 is great for looking at rolling ridgelines with a forest setting in the foreground, but all views of the actual river (Lewis Fork) are completely blocked by trees.

The Lump Overlook

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Lump Overlook is at Milepost 264 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail to the grassy hillside is pretty popular since it is so short and so easy to follow. This "mountain meadow" is super popular for flying kites and model airplanes and picnicking.

The overlook views out onto the trail and the hillside. The overlook can be crowded by trees, but the super short walk up the hill provides great views of sunrises and sunsets, especially in the fall months when the leaves start to change colors.

Carter Falls

Highlight • Waterfall

Nice opportunity to stretch the legs on a short hike. The falls are more like cascades but nevertheless really pretty - but the lower (and prettier) section needs sure-footedness in order to access (it’s steep, in parts muddy and slippery and rocky). Parking was no problem when we were there in October- but I can imagine that in summer this place can get crowded.

Flat Rock Ridge Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Flat Rock Ridge Trail is one of the trails offering backcountry access into the Doughton Park area. The trail traverses a couple grassy ridges before diving down into the trees on either side of Flat Rock and Bell Knobs. This trail can be somewhat overgrown at times since it doesn't see as much traffic as some of the other trails in the park.

The trail (from the cabins to Devil Garden) is currently only accessible for about 700 meters. After that, it is littered with fallen trees. Avoiding it is not possible. However, other trails, such as Bluff Mountain, lead from the parking lot. This trail is cleared and very beautiful. You can also follow the signs. It's impossible to get lost.
