August 7, 2024, New River State Park (U.S. 221 Access)

New River State Park in North Carolina offers a variety of recreational opportunities centered around the scenic New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America. New River State Park straddles Alleghany and Ashe Counties in far northwestern North Carolina and protects a 30-mile stretch of the New River. The park spans nearly 3,000 acres across several access areas, with most reachable by car and some only by water. The U.S. 221 Access Area houses the main office, a visitor center, the park's only drive-in campground, picnic spots, a boat launch, and river access. This part of the park also features several hiking trails that wind through lush forests and along the riverbank. River Run Trail and the Hickory Trail are the two primary trails here, and they actually connect to each other to make a nice loop.

The Virginia is for Lovers slogan was created by a team led by David N. Martin and George Woltz for the Virginia State Travel account in 1968. It has since become a famous slogan for the state, and not every road crossing into Virginia has this slogan, but you can find the Virginia is for Lovers here on County Line Road.

Pass over the Cam Fields Memorial Bridge and get a great view of the New River. This road has shoulders large enough to ride in and is not very busy with cars.

While riding on Wilson Highway (Highway 58), look south downhill a little and catch a glimpse of a white house with two chimneys. This is the Brookside Farmhouse and farmstead, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's private, so please don't disturb, but it's a cool home still standing from 1877 that can be seen from the road.

The Cumberland Knob Recreation Area at Milepost 217.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway was the first established recreation area to ever be opened on the parkway. There is a huge picnic area on the property along with hiking trails. You'll be hard-pressed to find a day when this pull-off doesn't see some visitors.
