Coldwater Creek loop from North Ogden

If you're seeking a challenging touring cycling adventure with big rewards, the Coldwater Creek loop from North Ogden is a difficult 10.7 miles (17.2 km) that packs in 1594 feet (486 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 1 hour and 42 minutes. The route offers stunning views of Ben Lomond and the North Ogden area, with glimpses of the Great Salt Lake, as you traverse a mix of packed gravel, dirt, and rocky sections, including talus boulder fields. You'll even ride through a unique spruce-fir forest, a distinctive feature along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, making for a diverse and engaging ride.

Planning your trip requires some consideration for the terrain; while it's a touring cycling route, its rugged nature, with 60% rocks in some areas, makes it better suited for mountain bikes or robust hybrids. Be mindful that parts of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, which this route utilizes, can become extremely narrow and steep, posing challenges even for bikes. Access is available from North Ogden, and it's wise to check local conditions before heading out, especially given the technical sections.

This loop is a segment of the larger Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a testament to superb engineering by Weber Pathways (now TFNU) in 2015, designed to make significant climbs manageable. It offers a less crowded alternative to other trails in the region, providing a sense of solitude amidst the challenging landscape. A unique local touch is the massive flag flown across the canyon around Veterans Day, visible from the city, adding a memorable landmark to your ride.

Ben Lomond Reservoir loop from North Ogden

340m

The Ben Lomond Reservoir loop from North Ogden, despite its name, is not a touring cycling route. Instead, it offers a challenging mountain biking experience through rocky sections, loose dirt, and numerous switchbacks, with some parts being narrow singletrack. While you'll be rewarded with grand views of Ogden Valley, the Great Salt Lake, and the Wasatch Mountain Range, the terrain is fundamentally unsuitable for touring bikes.

If you're considering this route, be aware that it's rated moderate, covers 8.4 miles (13.5 km), and involves 1128 feet (344 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 1 hour and 17 minutes. However, for touring cyclists, it's best to look for alternative routes specifically designed for road or gravel, as this trail is geared towards extreme mountain biking. Parking information for touring cyclists is not relevant here, as the route is not recommended for that sport.

The trails in the Ben Lomond area are renowned for their strenuous climbs and exhilarating descents, often compared to Ogden's version of the "Monarch Crest" trail for mountain bikers. They pass through diverse ecosystems, featuring incredible wildflowers in spring and summer, and forested sections with maple and aspen. This area is a significant draw for those seeking epic and challenging off-road cycling adventures, but not for touring.

You'll tackle significant elevation changes, including the challenging North Ogden Divide, which rewards your effort with expansive mountain vistas. The route then descends into the lush canyon, following the Ogden River, with the historic Ogden Canyon Kiln providing a unique historical landmark along the way.

Planning your ride requires attention to the weather, as the 27.7 miles (44.6 km) loop with 2259 feet (689 metres) of elevation gain is rated difficult and takes nearly 3 hours. Ensure your bike is in good condition, especially your brakes for the steep descents. The spot along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail can be just a trickle or a full-blown stream crossing depending on the time of year. It's best to just hop off and push your bike across if you can't see the rocks at the bottom.

You can bike around the reservoir while enjoying the landscape since there is a very compacted trail for most of the route. As for the reservoir, apart from swimming in its small beach you can also enjoy other activities or eat something in the picnic areas.

A paved pathway running through the heart of Ogden from Rainbow Gardens to Fort Buenaventura. The pathway leads alongside Ogden river through several parks, past a pond, and to the junction of Weber River, at which point the trail becomes Weber River Pathway. This is a great one to do with the family or for a quick nature escape.

This is a beautiful, two-lane state highway running alongside the western edge of the Pineview Reservoir. Offering absolutely stunning mountain and water views, this portion of the road is designated as part of the Ogden River Scenic Byway. If you are looking for a rather flat road that does not lack in scenery, this is the one for you!

The historic Ogden Canyon Kiln is a lime kiln that was built in the canyon in 1865 to produce many local materials for construction purposes. While the kiln is not 100% the original, it has now been restored as a reminder of the area's past to the community

Coldwater Creek is a refreshing stream running through Coldwater Canyon, and the perfect stop to freshen up during a hike. Icy and slippery conditions during rainy and snowy weather make for dangerous conditions, so be cautious.
