The Chelan Lakeshore Trail offers a unique journey along the remote northeast shore of Lake Chelan, providing expansive views of the water and surrounding North Cascade peaks. You'll hike through varied terrain, from sunny ponderosa pine slopes to shaded creek crossings, with wildflowers like balsamroot and lupine adding color in spring. The route is known for its rolling ups and downs, culminating in the remote town of Stehekin.

Accessing this difficult 33.5-mile (53.9 km) trail is an adventure in itself, as the Prince Creek trailhead is only reachable by ferry or private boat from Chelan. With 5239 feet (1597 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 16 hours and 6 minutes, it's best tackled in spring or fall to avoid intense summer heat. Be prepared for route finding due to recent storm damage, including washouts and downed trees.

What truly sets this trail apart is its unique boat-only access and its destination, Stehekin, a roadless community at the head of Lake Chelan. This makes it an excellent early-season backpacking option, often snow-free by April when higher mountain trails are still impassable. It's a true backcountry experience, connecting you to a remote corner of Washington State.

1,860m

1,860m

The Purple Creek Trail is a demanding hike that plunges you into the rugged beauty of the Stehekin area, offering a true backcountry experience. You'll navigate a steep singletrack path through changing landscapes, from ponderosa pine forests and fire-affected zones to high alpine meadows. The reward for this difficult 15.3-mile (24.6 km) journey, which involves a massive 6089 feet (1856 metres) of elevation gain and takes roughly 9 hours and 37 minutes, is the breathtaking panorama from Purple Pass and the serene basin of Lake Juanita.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration, as the remote location of Stehekin means access is limited to ferry, floatplane, or other trails. The trailhead is behind the Golden West Visitor Center, but be aware that water sources are scarce beyond the initial 1.5 miles, so carry plenty. If you're planning to hike early in the season, be prepared for snow around Lake Juanita until early July, which can complicate navigation. Backcountry camping at Juanita Lake requires a permit, and campfires are prohibited.

This trail is a gateway to extensive backcountry exploration, connecting to other routes like the Boulder Creek Trail and Summit Trail for multi-day adventures. It's particularly notable for its dramatic elevation profile and the stunning fall colors of the larch trees around Lake Juanita. The trail also offers a unique chance to observe returning wildlife in areas recovering from past fires, showcasing nature's resilience.

Boulder Butte stands at 7,355 feet above sea level east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin in the heart of the North Cascades. This remote-feeling peak is a great challenge and an excellent adventure if in Stehekin. From the top you get panoramic views that you will most likely enjoy in solitude.

October 26, 2023, Purple Pass

Purple Pass is a high mountain pass east of Lake Chelan and Stehekin. Although the climb up to the pass is strenuous - ascending many, many switchbacks - you get great views of the lake, and in the summer there is an abundance of wildflowers lining the trail. From Purple Pass you can either summit Boulder Butte or continue to Juanita Lake, which has campsites near a small lake.

If the tiny Purple Point Campground at the north side of Stehekin is already full, there is lots of room in this idyllic forested area. It can get a little crowded during Pacific Crest Trail hiker season which is roughly mid August through mid September.

This short loop trail offers a great view over Stehekin and Lake Chelan. Take a seat at the wooden bench to take in this unique landscape at the fullest. Along the loop you will find two wooden bridges and a small hidden waterfall. Enjoy!

Nestled deep into the North Cascades National Park lies the tiny town of Stehekin. It is less than 100 miles from the Canadian border and only accessible by foot, boat or seaplane. It is eleven miles from the Pacific Crest Trail on a dirt road. Two shuttle companies run at least four times a day to get you here. Most hikers send their final resupply package to Stehekin. The small town has a friendly post office, an excellent restaurant, a small store, hotel, campground and a laundromat with showers. You should definitely stop at the bakery outside of town and get some delicious cinnamon rolls – my personal favorite. The shuttle stops there, too.
