One of the features on the main shopping street in Grantown-on-Spey. The war memorial is on the middle of it all. There is a good hot sandwich shop opposite the memorial, £2.30 for a double sausage hot sandwich in Sep 2024 which is good

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes around Lochindorb?

Yes, the area offers several gentle walks suitable for families. For a shorter outing, consider the Unmarked Path to Creag Liath loop from Grantown-on-Spey. It's a relatively short and manageable trail that still provides a good sense of the local landscape without being too strenuous for little legs.

What are the options for circular walks in the area?

Most trails around Lochindorb are loops, which makes planning a day out very convenient. You can find everything from short loch-side circuits to longer moorland treks. For a substantial but rewarding circular hike, the Grant Arms Hotel – Grantown-on-Spey loop from Advie offers a great experience through varied Highland scenery.

Can I bring my dog on hikes around Lochindorb?

Yes, the open spaces and woodland trails around Lochindorb are generally great for walking with dogs. Places like Anagach Woods are particularly welcoming for dogs, but remember to keep them under control to protect local wildlife such as red squirrels, deer, and ground-nesting birds. Always be mindful of livestock when crossing moorland.

How do I get to Lochindorb and is there parking?

Lochindorb is accessed via a single-track road with passing places, branching off the main roads between Grantown-on-Spey, Ferness, and Dava. There is informal parking available along the lochside, but it can be limited, especially on sunny days. Drive slowly and be prepared to use the passing places for oncoming traffic.

Can I visit the castle on the island in Lochindorb?

The ruins of Lochindorb Castle are on an island and are not directly accessible by a path or bridge. While you get excellent views of it from the loch shore on many hikes, reaching the castle itself would require a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. The presence of the castle adds a dramatic historical backdrop to the scenery.

What kind of wildlife can I see while hiking?

The area is a Special Protection Area for wildlife, making it a fantastic spot for nature lovers. While hiking across Dava Moor and around the loch, keep an eye out for bird species like black-throated divers and greylag geese. In nearby woodlands, you might spot red squirrels and deer.

What should I know about midges before I go?

Midges can be a nuisance, particularly during the summer months (typically May to September), on calm, damp days, and especially around dawn and dusk. It's highly recommended to pack a good insect repellent and consider a midge head net for maximum comfort during your hike.

How do the hikes here compare to Cairngorms National Park?

Hiking around Lochindorb offers a sense of remote, open moorland beauty and relative solitude. The trails are generally less mountainous than the high peaks of the Cairngorms. While the Cairngorms National Park provides vast, rugged mountain experiences, Lochindorb is perfect for those seeking tranquil loch-side and moorland walks with a unique historical atmosphere.

Are there other activities besides hiking at Lochindorb?

Yes, the loch itself is popular for other outdoor pursuits. The calm waters are ideal for fishing for brown trout (permits may be required), as well as canoeing and paddleboarding. The area's remote feel also makes it a popular spot for wild camping.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Lochindorb?

The trails around Lochindorb are highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the stunning views across the open Dava Moor, the tranquility of the loch, and the dramatic backdrop provided by the island castle. The variety of routes, from easy loops to more challenging treks, is also frequently mentioned.

What is the terrain like on the trails?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter a mix of everything from clear paths along the loch shore to rougher, sometimes boggy tracks across the open Dava Moor. Some routes also take you through sheltered woodlands. Appropriate waterproof footwear is essential for staying comfortable on most hikes here.
