A piece of Bernburg's history is coming to an end: After almost 60 years in service, the ferry "Einheit" will soon make its final journey. Bernburger Freizeit GmbH (BFG) and the city of Bernburg have decided to replace the old, diesel-powered ferry with a modern electric ferry. This marks the end of an era of nostalgia, but at the same time marks the beginning of a new chapter for ferry operations between the two banks of the Saale River. In 2026, the "Einheit" would have celebrated its 60th anniversary. The ferry has left countless memories for the people of Bernburg, not only as a means of transport but also as a symbol of the connection between the mountain town and the valley town. However, in recent years, the condition of the vessel has deteriorated, and recurring repairs have significantly increased operating costs. Bernburger Freizeit GmbH and the city of Bernburg have therefore decided to purchase a new ferry. The choice fell on a modern electric ferry, which is scheduled to take over operation of the "Einheit" starting in summer 2025. This decision was motivated by the limited reliability of the old ferry's service in recent years and the need to ensure a reliable means of transport in the long term.
