Really nice and very welcome cafe serving breakfast, lunch and snacks through the day in a garden centre / nursery surrounding. Just a short cycle from the Kennet and Avon towpath

A narrow pack horse bridge over the river Avon between Trowbridge and Melksham. It's a beautiful old bridge and a useful crossing point allowing you to run loops without using the busy roads close by.

The Glove Factory is a modern complex of office and studio space in a lovely setting on the edge of Holt. There is a large car park so this can be a good start point for a run. The lakes are used by an outdoor swimming club based here and the Wild Herb field kitchen is also here. The cafe is a great place for a pre/post or mid run snack/meal/coffee. Cafe open Mon to Sat 10:00 - 16:00.

From Whaddon Lane, the byway (at the time of writing this) is first a bit rutty, then, after the new signs, is tarmacked over, making it a nice smooth ride. At the rugby club, you can turn onto the road or turn right onto a small section of the cycleway.

Yes, many trails in the area are suitable for walking with dogs, especially the towpaths along the Kennet and Avon Canal. However, it's always best to keep dogs on a lead, particularly near locks, on roads, and in areas with livestock or wildlife. For off-lead time, you might consider visiting dedicated spaces like the Four Acres Dog Field near Trowbridge.
Hilperton is a great base for circular hikes. Many routes are designed as loops, so you can start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. For a shorter loop, consider the Hiking loop from Trowbridge, which is under 5 km and offers a pleasant, easy-going experience through local parks and along the river.
Definitely. The towpath along the Kennet and Avon Canal is flat and easy to navigate, making it perfect for families with children. Biss Meadows Country Park is another excellent option, offering accessible paths and a pond, providing a lovely setting for a short family stroll close to Trowbridge town centre.
Many walks in the area can be combined with a stop at a local pub or café. The Avoncliff Bridge – The Glove Factory Café loop from Holt is a great choice. This moderate 10 km walk takes you through scenic countryside and past The Glove Factory Café, a popular spot for refreshments.
Parking availability varies depending on your starting point. For walks along the canal, there are often small, informal parking areas near bridges and locks, but these can fill up quickly. Larger towns like Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon have public car parks that can serve as a good base for longer walks. It's always wise to check for any local parking restrictions before you set off.
The canal is a central feature of the region. Key highlights include the impressive Avoncliff and Dundas Aqueducts, which carry the canal over the River Avon. The series of locks, such as those at Semington, offer a fascinating glimpse into the canal's industrial heritage. The flat, well-maintained towpath provides a tranquil setting for spotting wildlife and watching the narrowboats go by.
Yes, the area has some beautiful ancient woodlands. Biss Wood and Green Lane Wood, both managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, are fantastic choices. These nature reserves feature well-defined trails through diverse habitats, offering opportunities to see a variety of flora and fauna, including rare butterflies and birds. They provide a peaceful escape into nature.
There are over 280 hiking routes to explore around Hilperton. The trails range from short, easy strolls along the canal to more demanding moderate hikes through the rolling countryside, ensuring there's a walk to suit every fitness level and interest.
