The Sun – York Solar System Greenway (York End)

Highlight • Structure

This is the York end of the 6.4 mile York Solar System Cycleway that heads southwards towards Selby along the former East Coast railway line on a Sustrans bike route.

It's a pan-flat disused railway with incredibly hard-packed gravel that's basically tarmac so any touring bike would cope. The whole stretch of the bike path is laid out like a scale model of the Solar System, with scale models of all the planets in our solar system on the edge of the track – naturally, in the order that you'd find them away from the sun. A really great educational addition to what is otherwise a beautiful, albeit quite standard, bike path!

Bishopthorpe Palace Gatehouse

Highlight • Monument

Bishopthorpe Palace is situated along the beautiful River Ouse south of the city centre of York. It's the official home of the Archbishop of York, and has been for all previous Archbishop's of York since 1241.

Whilst the inside of the palace is only open for pre-arranged tours with quite a long waiting list, you can still admire the palace and its beautiful gatehouse from the footpath outside.

It's very safe. So great for kids. In some areas there are some bumps in surface due to tree roots. The honesty hut is a nice place to stop and (if stocked up and you have some pennies for the honesty box) you can get a biscuit or two.

Clifton Ings Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This footpath follows the banks of the River Ouse and the stream along the edge of Clifton Ings into (or out of) York. It shares the trail with the York and Selby long distance walking trail.

The Ings are a flood defence scheme where the grassland here can be flooded at times of high flow, reducing the impact of the river and flooding in York. In the summer, farmers use the lush grassland to feed the cattle.

Built in 2001 for over £4m, the York Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Ouse in York, England. It connects New Walk to Terry Avenue, south of the city centre, and is part of a popular circular walking route. The bridge was designed to shorten the walking and cycling routes for people in the South Bank area of the city to the University of York and the city centre. If you are a pedestrian, then keep your wits about you. Cyclists will not give you any room and will not slow down either.

The bridge over the River Ouse features a single leaning arch with cables fanned out like bicycle spokes, symbolizing its purpose as a key link for walkers and cyclists.

It's been closed for 3 years according to the local I spoke to for directions, go straight to the park and ride down the road and rejoin the cycle way there.
