Old tin mine ruins. It is a decent trail area to ride on. Quite hilly and needs some effort to ceddle and climb on

South Caradon Mine stretches across the southern and southwestern slopes of Caradon Hill, extending down to the River Seaton in the valley below. Here, you'll find the remnants of the mine’s main ore-dressing and service complex. The valley also holds earlier mining remains, including medieval and early post-medieval tin streamworks.

Please note: Bodmin Moor is notorious for its changeable weather conditions, so please bring suitable clothing as the location is remote and very exposed.

This landmark is located next to the Cheesewring Quarry (which provided the granite cladding for the structure of Tower Bridge in London) and is surrounded by other granite formations. In the late 19th century, this landmark was threatened with destruction due to its proximity to blasting operations, but was saved through local activism.

Yes, the region is excellent for circular walks. Many routes explore the historic mining landscape of Bodmin Moor or the nearby river valleys. For a walk that combines history with dramatic scenery, consider the The Cheesewring – Cheesewring rock formation loop from Pensilva, which takes you to remarkable granite tors and Bronze Age stone circles.
For a gentle walk that's great for families, the Seaton Beach loop from Polbathic is a fantastic choice. It's a relatively flat trail that passes through the Seaton Valley Nature Reserve and offers a pleasant coastal experience without any strenuous climbs.
Many trails in the area are suitable for walking with dogs, especially in the woodlands and on the open moor. However, it's important to keep your dog on a lead, particularly on Bodmin Moor due to the presence of ponies and sheep, and within sensitive nature reserves. Always be prepared for stiles and check local signage.
Absolutely. The Golitha Falls National Nature Reserve is a must-visit for waterfall enthusiasts. It's a highly-regarded local spot where the River Fowey cascades through an ancient oak woodland. The trails here can be steep and muddy in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The area is rich in history. You can explore the remnants of Cornwall's 19th-century mining boom, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The South Caradon Mine Ruins – Donkey Pond loop from Lower Tremar is a great hike for seeing the evocative old engine houses. On Bodmin Moor, you'll also find prehistoric sites like The Hurlers Stone Circles.
The South West Coast Path is just a short drive away. You can access stunning sections of the coast from places like Seaton, Talland Bay, or the dramatic Rame Head. These areas offer everything from gentle beach walks to more challenging treks with steep climbs and rewarding panoramic views.
Hiking on Bodmin Moor offers a very different experience from the woodland walks. Expect wide-open, windswept landscapes with granite tors, historical ruins, and panoramic views. The terrain can be uneven and exposed to the elements, so it's wise to be prepared with appropriate clothing and navigation, even on a clear day.
Yes, the Siblyback Dam – Siblyback Lake loop from St Cleer is a popular option. This trail offers a fairly level walk around the perimeter of the Siblyback Lake reservoir, providing lovely water views and a peaceful atmosphere.
The trails are very well-regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the variety of landscapes, from the ancient woodlands and river valleys to the rugged, historic moorland. The mix of industrial heritage and natural beauty is a frequently mentioned highlight.
For a longer day out, the Forest Trail – Duloe Stone Circle loop from St. Keyne and Trewidland is a great moderate hike of nearly 13 km. It combines woodland paths with a visit to a fascinating ancient stone circle, involving some moderate ascents and descents.
Yes, some of the popular starting points for hikes on Bodmin Moor, such as the car park for The Hurlers Stone Circles near Minions, offer free parking. It's always a good idea to arrive early during peak season as these spots can fill up quickly.
Sturdy, waterproof walking boots are essential as many paths, especially in woodlands like Golitha Falls, can be muddy and uneven. The weather on Bodmin Moor can change rapidly, so packing waterproofs and extra layers is crucial, even if the day starts sunny. A map and compass or a reliable GPS device are also highly recommended for moorland hikes.
