One of many hareβs dotted round Cirencester. Part of a hare trail that took place a few years ago, some were sold off and a few remain.

What you don't expect: You'll be happy to find shade on the Thames Path, as large parts of it are very sunny and temperatures are around 30 degrees, especially in summer. Even when it rains, a little protection from trees is good. In the event of a thunderstorm, it's definitely advisable to take refuge in a small wood like this instead of continuing on the path in open terrain. We needed to do this twice.

A pretty little pub, the kind we would often visit on our way along the Thames. The food is very good here, and there is even a small library inside for children. You can also eat outside, but the beer garden is very sunny, so we preferred to stay inside when it was 32 degrees.

A little difficult to find, but if you can move freely across the meadows with GPS, you will also find the source of the Thames.

The source of the Thames is a little difficult to find because it is in the middle of cultivated meadows. We had to take a little detour because there were huge combine harvesters driving right through the meadows. However, once you cross the field, you will find a fenced-in area where the spring is marked. We were there in midsummer, so there was no water bubbling here. Another new experience: a spring without water.

The Monarch's Way is a well-known hiking / trail running route. Based on the route taken by King Charles II during the Civil War. This section is right by Cirencester Abbey and in the Town Centre. Nearby is "The Fleece" pub & restaurant, which also has some interesting history. The king is said to have stayed in room 1 while on the "monarchs way"

I didn't even spot this at first! I was busy looking at the pretty buildings! This is on the corner of a path that leads down to a riverside walk & the open-air swimming pool.

Kemble is well-served by its railway station, making it easy to arrive by train. Several walks start directly from the station, such as the Kemble Village β Kemble Railway Station loop from Kemble, which is a great way to explore the immediate area without needing a car.
Yes, the landscape around Kemble is generally flat, making it suitable for families and beginners. The Kemble Railway Station β Kemble Village loop from Kemble is a short, easy stroll of just over 3 km that explores the village and nearby fields.
The walk to the source of the Thames is a classic Kemble experience. It takes you through quintessential Cotswold water meadows to a stone marker that designates the official start of the river. Be aware that the riverbed can be dry here, especially in summer, but the walk through the countryside remains very scenic.
There are several excellent circular routes. A great option is the Source of the River Thames β Source of the River Thames loop from Ewen, which starts from the neighbouring village and follows the fledgling river through peaceful meadows.
Most trails around Kemble are dog-friendly, passing through open fields and woodlands. However, you will likely cross fields with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead in these areas. Always follow local signage regarding dogs.
Many walkers enjoy visiting a traditional pub after their hike. One popular option is to park at a local pub, enjoy a walk, and return for a meal. For example, the walk through the ancient woodland at Siccaridge Wood is conveniently located near a pub that walkers often use as a base.
The paths, especially those through water meadows and woodlands, can become very muddy and slippery during the winter months or after heavy rain. It's highly recommended to wear waterproof hiking boots with good grip for a safe and comfortable walk.
Yes, the Cotswold Water Park is a short distance from Kemble and offers miles of off-road walking and cycling paths around its many lakes. It's a great alternative for those looking for flat, waterside scenery and excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
While the immediate Kemble area is known for its gentle, rolling hills and riverside scenery, you can find more dramatic viewpoints a short drive away. Wotton Hill is a local favourite, offering a short but steep climb to stunning views that can stretch as far as Wales on a clear day.
Kemble itself is not directly on the Cotswold Way National Trail. However, it is a key point on the Wysis Way, a 55-mile footpath that links the Thames Path (which starts in Kemble) to the Offa's Dyke Path, crossing the Cotswold Way in the process.
While there is no large, dedicated car park for the trails, parking is often available in Kemble village or at the railway station. Some walkers choose to park considerately at a country pub where they plan to have a meal after their hike. Always check for any local parking restrictions.
