Castle Neroche is a significant historical site in Somerset, England, located on the northern escarpment of the Blackdown Hills. It is not a standing stone castle today, but rather a complex of impressive earthworks that reveal a long history of use.

Excellent coffee and cake. There is seating inside and out, and its great value, too. Situated in the Trull Church Community Centre, it's run by volunteers, and all the cakes are homemade. There's also a defibrillator and bleed kit on the wall outside.

It's not a waterfall , but a weir, to control the water flow down to the mill at Haygrove, which is now converted to a house. Apparently, it was called a waterfall by someone in COVID times. It made the front page of TripAdvisor and the name stuck.

Perfectly placed after a steep climb with wonderful views across the levels and beyond...

Heading south across the stones it's a steep rooty climb up to the footpath, with a duck under a rail thrown in.

For those seeking a challenge, there are a few difficult hikes with significant elevation gain, particularly those heading into the Blackdown Hills.
Yes, circular routes are very common in this area. Most trails are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. This makes planning your day and parking much simpler.
The region is known for its protected landscapes. Key highlights include the ancient woodlands and species-rich grasslands of Thurlbear Wood and Quarrylands, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You can also explore the rolling plateau and river valleys of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Many trails around Orchard Portman are great for walking with dogs, especially through the open hills and woodlands. However, you will likely cross fields with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead in these areas. Also, be mindful of ground-nesting birds during spring and summer.
Certainly. For an easy and engaging walk suitable for the whole family, consider the Vivary Park Fountain β Magdalene Lane loop from Taunton. This gentle 5.5 km route explores a beautiful public park and is mostly flat, making it accessible for all ages.
Parking availability depends on your chosen route. For trails starting in towns like Taunton, you'll find public car parks. For more rural routes, there are often small, dedicated lay-bys or car parks near trailheads, such as those serving the Blackdown Hills or Thurlbear Wood. It's always best to check the starting point of your specific komoot Tour for parking notes.

Both are excellent choices but offer different experiences. The Orchard Portman area provides access to the rolling plateaus and wooded valleys of the Blackdown Hills. The Quantock Hills, to the north, are characterized more by open heathland ridges and dramatic coastal views over the Bristol Channel. Your choice depends on whether you prefer sheltered woodland walks or expansive, windswept hilltops.
Yes, the area offers several rewarding viewpoints. A popular destination for its panoramic views is Cothelstone Hill, a highly-regarded spot among locals. Hikes within the Blackdown Hills AONB, such as those around Castle Neroche or Staple Hill, also lead to high points with fantastic vistas over the Vale of Taunton.
The elevation varies significantly with the trail's location. Easier walks near Taunton, like the Corner House on Park Street loop from Taunton, are mostly flat with less than 30 meters of ascent. In contrast, challenging routes that venture into the Blackdown Hills can involve over 400 meters of climbing, offering a much more strenuous workout.
The larger town of Taunton is well-served by buses and trains, making it a good starting point for several walks in the area. For more remote trailheads in the Blackdown Hills, public transport can be limited, and accessing them might require a car or taxi from a nearby town.
