This short but historic hike takes you to a dark place from the past: the so-called Himmler Bunker near Pozezdrze in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Hidden deep in the forest lie the remains of a well-camouflaged SS command bunker – built as part of the Third Reich's Eastern Front strategies. Today, only concrete rubble, thick walls, and sunken cellars remain as evidence of the Nazi state's power architecture. The bunker complex served Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsführer of the SS, as a retreat and command post during World War II. Together with the nearby Wolf's Lair (Hitler's headquarters), it was part of the military power center in the East.

Lake Kruklin is a peaceful and less frequented body of water located near Giżycko, ideal for cyclists looking for peace and close contact with nature. Surrounded by fields and forests, the lake offers several wild beaches and good places to relax with a view of the water. The cycling routes in the area are mainly quiet asphalt and gravel roads, so it is worth having a trekking bike, especially if you plan to drive around the lake. There are not many catering points on site, so it is best to take provisions, and in the summer also mosquito repellent. Kruklin is a great option for a relaxing trip off the main trails of Masuria.

Himmler's bunker, 21.4 m long, 19.3 m wide and 8.4 m high, had two 80 cm wide entrances that were previously closed with steel doors. Despite the impressive external dimensions, the interior was cramped due to the bunker's meter-thick walls and ceiling. In 1943, when the German troops on the Eastern Front withdrew, Himmler ordered the scorched earth policy from the Hochwald.

The former field command post Hochwald is about 20 km as the crow flies from the former Hitler bunker Wolfsschanze. Access to the main bunker space can be reached via several routes or is also signposted. On the main square with Himmler's bunker, you can already see a number of trails; but would advise you to be very careful when exploring! There is also a beautiful forest and several lakes attached. Furthermore, the bunker ruins are also on the well-known E11 hiking trail 🤠👋

The bunker stands alone in the forest, away from the other large bunker locations.
