It occupies the building of the Colegio Convento de la Madre de Dios, founded by María de Mendoza, daughter of the Counts of Mélito, in 1565, as part of the university city of Alcalá, although the current construction dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, as the original building was too small and was also structurally deficient, although it is likely that the convent doorway of the final building, through which the Museum is currently accessed, was reused from the previous one. On December 2, 1808, during the French invasion, the friars were evicted and the building was converted into a cavalry barracks for the Napoleonic troops, who were apparently responsible for the destruction of the main altar of the church and the looting of valuable objects. The friars returned in 1815, but in 1835 the convent was disentailed, passing into the hands of the City Council of Alcalá de Henares. The convent area was used as a prison until 1951, while the church housed the bar association, courts and the Audience, with the entire building undergoing profound modifications, such as the transfer of the church's façade, which faced Plaza de las Bernardas, to Calle de Santiago.

The fictional stories about the tragic hero Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, who have to endure numerous strange adventures, are Spanish world literature in the best sense of the word. So it should not surprise us to find a tribute to the writer & poet (and "literary father" - among other things - of the two protagonists of his main work depicted here) MIGUEL DE CERVANTES in the form of this monument here in Alcalá De Henares. The slightly raised and outstretched arm of one and the crossed arms of the other, especially due to the empty space in between, suggest a perhaps even heated discussion between the two. But perhaps the artist of these two excellently portrayed sculptures simply left the distance so that the viewer does not have to remain outside, but can sit right in the middle of the scene.

The Monument to Don Quixote and Sancho is a sculptural work located in Alcalá de Henares, it is located in the Calle Mayor of Alcalá de Henares, right in front of the House Museum of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The sculpture represents Don Quixote and Sancho Panza sitting on a bench, life-size. Since its inauguration in April 2005, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Alcalá de Henares. Don't hesitate to take a photo with Don Quixote and Sancho. It is a corner full of history and literature! 📸🌟
