The Torre dell'Alto (also known as Torre Santa Maria dell'Alto) is a historic 16th-century coastal watchtower. It sits enthroned on a 50-meter-high cliff directly above the Ionian Sea in the Santa Caterina district. It also marks the picturesque entrance to the Porto Selvaggio Regional Nature Park. The tower was completed in 1569 under the reign of Philip II (son of Charles V). It was part of a massive defense system against the incursions of the Ottomans and Saracens on the Salento coast. The structure was designed by local architect Angelo Spalletta. The 14-meter-high, square tower was in constant visual contact with the neighboring towers: the Torre Uluzzo to the north and the smaller Torre Santa Caterina to the south. The striking external staircase, which leads to the elevated entrance via masonry arches, is still very well preserved today.

The path is partly made up of a wooden walkway. It allows you to reach Porto Cesareo practically from the beach.

I rode the cycle/pedestrian path that runs through Santa Caterina: a real pleasure to pedal on quiet roads, with suggestive views and a relaxing atmosphere. A perfect stretch to enjoy the bike in total serenity, immersed in the charm of the place.

A very popular summer tourist destination and prohibitive to reach in the summer period given the high influx of bathers, it is however a wonderful bay to visit in the low season, when the crystal clear water and the silence of nature takes over.

Completed in 2024, this pier aims to enhance the southern coast of Porto Cesareo, rich in small ports nestled in the clear, emerald water of the Strea bay. And it succeeds very well. Beautiful to ride, it is part of the CICLONICA route, the Salento Ionian Cycle Route.
