July 8, 2026, View of the Old Railway Bridge from the Spyk Side

The Griethausen railway bridge, also called Altrheinbrücke, near Griethausen (city of Kleve) is the oldest still existing railway bridge in the German section of the Rhine and is a listed monument. It was built from 1863–1865 by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (Rhenish Railway Company) with the construction of the left-bank Lower Rhine line from Cologne via Neuss, Krefeld and Kleve to the Dutch North Sea ports under the direction of Emil Hermann Hartwich and led across a dead Rhine arm in the direction of Elten and further to Zevenaar in the Netherlands. The Rhine current was crossed by a ferry. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griethausener_Eisenbahnbr%C3%BCcke)

De Bijland is located in the natural area where three major rivers fork: the Rhine, the Waal, and the IJssel. Due to the open connection to the Rhine, De Bijland is easily accessible (kilometer marker 864). This location makes De Bijland particularly suitable as a starting point or stopover for excursions on Dutch waterways. But this area is also very suitable for other forms of recreation. De Gelderse Poort, for example, is an ideal area for hiking and cycling. There are several signposted hiking, cycling, and skating routes there. You can also start one of the numerous cycling routes from De Bijland.

Very nice concrete cycle path, past many small lakes, some of which were created by gravel extraction.

Although not asphalted, the fine gravel is easy to ride.

Unfortunately, in warm weather the standing water is always heavily overgrown with algae.
