The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Perales is a historic chapel located in Bercianos del Real Camino. The chapel was built in the 17th century. It was originally dependent on the Hospital del Cebreiro, which was founded in the 12th century. It is a simple brick building with a gable roof and a single tower. The interior is sober but charming, with a focus on devotion to Our Lady of Perales. Every year on September 8, a romería (pilgrimage) is held in her honor, during which the people of Bercianos del Real Camino visit the chapel and celebrate a party. The chapel is open from June 15 to September 30, from Monday to Sunday, between 11:00 and 13:00 and 18:00 and 20:00.

There are 5 road cycling routes around Moratinos listed in this guide, offering a range of experiences from moderate to difficult. These routes traverse the diverse landscapes of Palencia province.
The region offers varied terrain. You'll find vast agricultural plains with gently undulating 'frozen waves' of land in the Tierra de Campos, ideal for tranquil rides on quiet secondary roads. To the north, the Montaña Palentina provides more challenging routes with significant elevation gain and mountainous landscapes.
While this guide features routes primarily of moderate to difficult grades, the broader Tierra de Campos region, where Moratinos is located, is known for its flat, open plains and quiet roads. These conditions are generally suitable for less experienced cyclists or those seeking an easier pace, though specific easy routes are not detailed in this selection. The historic Canal de Castilla also offers parallel cycle paths that are excellent for easy rides.
For cyclists seeking a challenge, the region offers difficult routes with considerable elevation gain. An example is the Sahagún and Almanza Castles Loop, which covers 84.2 miles (135.5 km) and features varied terrain and historical sites. The Montaña Palentina to the north is also known for its demanding mountain passes.
The road cycling routes around Moratinos are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars from 1 review. Cyclists often appreciate the low-traffic secondary roads and the scenic views of agricultural expanses and charming villages.
Yes, many routes in the area are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end in the same location. For instance, the Hike from Sahagún – circular via Mayorga and Grajal de Campos is a moderate 48.8 miles (78.5 km) path that offers scenic views and connects charming villages in a loop.
The area is rich in history and culture. You can explore sites like the Geographical Center of the Camino Francés – Ermita de la Virgen del Puente, the San Benito Arch and Ruins of the Monastery of San Benito, or the ancient Bodegas de Moratinos. Many routes also pass through picturesque villages like Ledigos, offering cultural exploration.
The Palencia province generally offers good cycling conditions for much of the year. Spring and autumn are often ideal, with milder temperatures and pleasant scenery. Summers can be warm, especially in the open plains of Tierra de Campos, while winters can be cold. Checking local weather forecasts before your ride is always recommended.
The routes often connect charming villages, which typically offer opportunities for refreshments and sometimes accommodation. Moratinos itself is a small village on the Camino de Santiago, meaning there are services catering to pilgrims and travelers, such as the Jacques de Molay Hostel. Larger towns like Sahagún, which is a common starting point for many routes, provide more extensive options for cafes, pubs, and accommodation.
Yes, parking is generally available in the villages and towns that serve as starting points for these routes. For example, Sahagún, a frequent starting point for many routes in this guide, offers parking options. As the secondary roads are less traveled, finding suitable parking in smaller villages is usually not an issue.
The suitability for families depends on the specific route and the family's cycling experience. The flat, quiet roads of the Tierra de Campos region can be very family-friendly for those with some cycling proficiency. However, routes with significant distances or elevation gain, particularly those venturing into the Montaña Palentina, might be more challenging for younger or less experienced family members. Always check the route's difficulty and length before setting out with children.
While the open nature of many road cycling routes in the Tierra de Campos region might seem suitable for dogs, it's important to consider local regulations, traffic conditions, and your dog's endurance. Many routes follow public roads where dogs would need to be on a leash or in a trailer for safety. For specific trails or natural parks, always check if dogs are permitted and if there are any specific rules regarding leashes or waste disposal.
Absolutely. Moratinos is directly on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, allowing cyclists to incorporate sections of this historic pilgrimage route. Additionally, the Historic Monuments of Sahagún – Bercianos del Real Camino loop from Sahagún is a moderate route that specifically highlights historical sites. The Canal de Castilla also offers a unique blend of historical interest and natural beauty along its banks.
