Many thanks to Klaus-Jürgen for answering my question about the significance of the structure. I found further information here: http://www.essweiler.de/cont3/geschichte/lebensverhaeltnisse-bildung-wirtschaft-und-religion/bergbau/steinbruch-schneeweiderhof

Basalt was quarried at Scheeweiderhof until the 1960s and 70s. A narrow-gauge railway transported the stones from the mountain station to the valley station at Altenglan train station. The railway was unpowered. The loaded, heavy wagons moved downhill, their weight pulling the empty wagons back up the mountain. This is the only remaining, well-preserved pillar. Further remnants of foundations can be found at regular intervals throughout the forest.

A historic workers' settlement from the 1920s at approximately 500 meters above sea level, it is characterized by the original basalt houses of the former quarry colony. From 1952 to 1965, there was a school here for the children of the quarry workers. Tip: Combine your visit with the popular hike or bike ride up to the top – the combination of impressive architecture, gentle elevation, and idyllic location makes the Schneeweiderhof a special stopover.

Extensive views over hills, fields, and forests around Eßweiler – typical of the Palatinate: gentle hills, clear air, and wide horizons. An ideal spot to pause and let your gaze wander. Tip: Especially beautiful on a clear day – the view often extends as far as the Sickinger Höhe. A perfect spot for a quiet photo or a short breather.

In the middle of the forest I found a structure made of concrete and steel. To me it looked like a former cable car. But what was this built for? Maybe someone knows the answer. Along this path I also saw two places, each with two large foundations. There might be a connection there.
