The Sierra de Aracena Villages Circuit immerses you in a surprisingly green Andalusian landscape, winding through dense oak and chestnut forests. The route takes you through picturesque white villages like Los Marines, offering an authentic experience and spectacular views of wooded valleys. This is a road cycling route that combines physical challenge with the natural and cultural beauty of the Sierra de Aracena.

This challenging 62.2-kilometer route, with 1177 meters of elevation gain, will take you approximately 3 hours and 19 minutes to complete. The mountain roads are quiet, but the constant ascents and descents demand excellent physical fitness. To avoid the heat, I recommend planning your ride in spring or autumn, when the weather is milder and the landscape is at its most vibrant.

The Sierra de Aracena is famous for its "jamón ibérico de bellota" (acorn-fed Iberian ham), so be sure to try it in one of the villages you pass through. In addition to the gastronomy, the route allows you to explore the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, a protected area with rich biodiversity and the chance to spot local wildlife. It's a unique opportunity to combine sport, culture, and nature.

The Convent of Our Lady of Peace in Fregenal de la Sierra is a historic building from the 17th century, built by the merchant Alonso de Paz. This convent, belonging to the Augustinian Mothers, stands out for its architecture and its rich history. In the church of the convent you can see three altarpieces made thanks to the “pious mandate” of Juan Bravo Murillo. In addition, above the choir there is a 17th century canvas attributed to the artist Domingo de Urbín, which represents the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Saint Ildefonso of Toledo.

The Plaza de Toros de Fregenal de la Sierra is located in the municipality of the same name, in the province of Badajoz. This plaza has a special charm, as it is located in the courtyard of the Templar castle. Built in 1781, the plaza has a capacity for 4,800 spectators and is classified as third category. The history of the plaza is closely linked to the urban development of the town and the influence of the castle fortress.

The name Los Marines has a curious history: during a visit by King Felipe II to the municipality, an inhabitant asked him why, being so powerful, he didn't bring the sea to the town. The king's response was: "I will not bring the sea, but you will be sailors." Since then, all the young men of the town performed their military service in the navy of Huelva. This picturesque municipality, surrounded by nature and beauty, is an ideal place to explore during a getaway to the Sierra de Huelva. Do not hesitate to visit Los Marines and enjoy its charm.

The Cañaveral de León lagoon is a pool that collects groundwater from the Fuente Redonda spring and serves to irrigate the crops in the area. For a few years it has also been conditioned to be the municipal swimming pool of this town. In summer a treatment plant is started up to offer a pleasant bath on the hottest days.

This old convent, founded in the mid-15th century, belonged to the Franciscan Poor Clares until the 19th century. Today it only conserves the cover, built in granite and in the late Gothic style.

This castle belonging to the Galician Band was built between the 13th and 15th centuries under the reign of Sancho IV el Bravo. It has eight towers linked by a great stone wall. It is worth visiting its interior, which can be accessed on weekends and holidays for less than two euros.
