From the early 1970s, the development of the new town in this area took shape with the construction of the Heron Park and the Heron Lake. The former hunting lodge was converted into a house divided into two rental apartments. In 1973, the building was acquired by the Public Institution for the Development of the New Town of Lille-East. In December 1982, the building, which had suffered damage since the expropriation, was returned to the municipality of Villeneuve d'Ascq. At the end of 1983, the municipality decided to have the building completely restored by the Compagnons du Devoir (a French craft guild) as part of a training program. The terrain is nice, but the signage isn't great... we start a circuit (no. 5) and very quickly there are no more signs... Circuit no. 7 seems well signposted

Magnificent trail. Bicycles are not prohibited, but the path is very narrow and there are many walkers, sometimes even dogs. You often have to slow down. So avoid it during busy times. I find the surface perfectly acceptable for gravel riding.

Marshland surrounded by a very smooth gravel road. Accessible by mountain bike. The marsh is very dry in summer.

Mountain biking around Lille offers diverse terrain. You'll find extensive canal-side paths, preserved meadows, and nearby forests like Mormal Forest. While the city itself is largely flat, the surrounding areas include the hilly Monts des Flandres, which provide more challenging off-road conditions with varying elevations, and can sometimes be muddy.
Yes, there are many options for beginners. Over 280 easy mountain bike trails are available. For a relaxed ride, consider routes along the Deûle river or the Roubaix Canal. An example of an easy trail is the Single – Islet of the Upper Deûle loop from Bauvin – Provin, which covers about 15.5 miles (24.9 km).
For more challenging rides, head towards the Monts des Flandres or Mormal Forest. These areas offer more rugged terrain, including singletrack, downhill sections, and technical elements like roots and rocks. Some routes, like the Leforest slope – The Great Wooden Bridge loop from La Fontaine, feature significant elevation changes for the region.
Many trails pass through or near beautiful natural areas. You can explore the vast Heron Lake, or ride through preserved meadows and small forests in places like Canteraine Park. The Citadel of Lille – Path Along the Moat loop from Phalempin allows you to cycle around the historic Citadel Park, Lille's largest green space.
Yes, many mountain bike trails around Lille are designed as loops. This allows for convenient starting and ending points. For instance, the Gasthuisbosdreef – Gravel track along the Huikerbossen loop from Wervicq-Sud is a popular circular route through forested areas.
Many natural areas and trails around Lille are dog-friendly, especially those in parks and forests. However, it's always best to check local regulations for specific trails or protected areas, as rules can vary. Generally, dogs on a leash are welcome in most public green spaces.
Absolutely. The flat canal-side paths along the Deûle and Roubaix Canal are excellent for family rides. Urban green spaces like the Parc de la Citadelle also offer accessible paths. Look for the 'easy' rated trails on komoot, such as the View of the Canal de Roubaix – Path Along the Moat loop from Bois Blancs, which is about 20.9 miles (33.6 km) long.
Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking around Lille, with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can also be good, but be prepared for warmer weather. During winter, some trails, especially in wooded areas or the Monts des Flandres, can become quite muddy and challenging due to rain.
Many mountain bike trails around Lille, particularly those starting from towns or larger parks, offer convenient parking. For example, routes originating from Wasquehal or Wervicq-Sud often have accessible parking nearby. Always check the specific route details on komoot for parking information at the trailhead.
To find less crowded trails, consider exploring routes further from the immediate city center or those in larger forested areas like Mormal Forest. Canal-side paths can be popular, but venturing into the smaller, less-known loops in the Hauts-de-France region can offer a more solitary experience. The The Great Wooden Bridge – Canal path loop from Santes offers a pleasant ride away from the busiest areas.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 2,000 reviews. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, from tranquil canal paths to the more challenging, hilly sections of the Monts des Flandres, and the accessibility of green spaces close to the city.
