The first document mentioning Colmar comes from the year 823, when Louis the Pious donated to the monastery of Münster a plot of land from the region Columbarium. Colmar becomes the seat of the Haut-Rhin prefecture.  In 1870 Colmar and its region are ceded to Germany. After 1918, the city belongs again to France, to be under German rule again in World War II.
