Sanctuary of Our Lady of Beauregard

Highlight • Religious Site

A truly splendid site overlooking Orgon! The site itself is charming and the view around is worth the detour! We see the Durance valley, the Ventoux, etc. Essential! Wikipedia:
"An old chapel would have been present on the site. The current chapel dates from the 19th century, by the will of the priest of Orgon, Canon Pierre Anselme Bonnard (from 1877 to 1899).
In 1592, an enclosure was erected to protect the site.
A monastery was built between 1638 and 1660. The Discalced Augustinians of Saint-Pierre d'Aix lived there until 17892.
Until 1854, the site was abandoned. Then the convent is restored. In 1878, work on the current chapel began.
The Gray Penitents of Avignon erect a cross in 1903.
In 1935 the Servite Brothers moved into the convent.
In 1958, the "Fraternity of the Little Sisters of Foucault" took possession of the premises, then in 1970 "the community of the Lion of Judas and the Immolated Lamb" which participated in its maintenance until 1982. In the absence of a caretaker , the basilica is looted and the monastery devastated.
In 1984, under the impetus of the Friends of Beauregard association, the site was again restored and maintained, allowing for the enhancement and development of cultural and tourist activities.

Mérindol

Highlight • Settlement

The village of Mérindol is directly linked to the Vaudois movement.

This movement was born from the preaching of a simple layman named Vaudès. This religious dissidence was first tolerated by the Roman Church. It was then rejected, the name “Vaudois” even becoming synonymous with sorcerer or heretic.

The movement of the poor of Lyon (another name given to the Waldensians) was born around the year 1170 from a rich bourgeois from Lyon named Valdès who was keen to return to the humility of the early times of Christianity. Driven from Lyon, the movement spread where Vaudois preachers could still preach publicly. He settled in Provence and especially in the county of Toulouse, as well as in northern Italy.

It was in Mérindol that the bloody massacre of the Vaudois began in 1545. A path of memory remains from this terrible past with some vestiges of these bygone times at the height of the current village.

If you are nearby, you should definitely visit. A short hike to the castle ruins is worthwhile. It is a very beautiful village. They have tried to leave it as it was 50 years ago. Everything is very beautifully done and very well preserved.😉👍👍👍

A little flat finally, it's going well! Possible to follow the canal all the way on gravel, it becomes narrow in places and you have to trudge at one point to cross a road (the only reason why the planner does not want to follow the canal all the way in my opinion)
