#10 - The club life of Jules Verne

During the 34 years I spent in Amiens, I took an active part in the life of the association. In 1872 I was admitted to the Academy of Amiens.
In 1895 I was appointed manager of the Savings Bank of Amiens, where I vouched for the deposits. When I go there, the Savings Bank building is at 19 rue de la République, also known as rue des Rabuissons. Between 1898 and 1904 I was a member of the board of directors and on May 2, 1898 I presented the report on the activities of the savings bank for the year 1897. In 1904 I resigned from this post because of my age and poor eyesight.
In 1889 I joined the Société Industrielle of Amiens, which had been founded in 1861 by weavers to promote regional industry and whose patrons included the engineer Edouard Gand, one of my best friends from Amiens. I like going to the richly stocked library of this association at 29 rue de Noyon.
I also joined the Horticultural Union and made two speeches at the general meetings in 1891 and 1894.

#08 - The Jules Verne Collection

“It is known that I visit the scientific and technical library of the Société Industrielle of the city of Amiens every day, where I find material for my novels. But I'm just as interested in the Amiens library, located on Rue de la République. As a councilor from 1888 to 1904, I was a member of the "Committee for the Inspection and Acquisition of Books for the Amiens Library". In 1895 I even donated 40 volumes of my work to him.”
Another encounter between the library and Jules Verne took place in 2000, when Amiens Métropole acquired the Gondolo della Riva collection, dedicated to the writer, his work and its worldwide reception. The collection includes around 20,000 documents and objects, in particular the correspondence between the publisher Jules Hetzel and Jules Verne, various manuscripts by the author including his travel diaries, and personal objects such as his desk and his world map.
This collection forms the basis for the permanent exhibition at the Maison de Jules Verne, in which around 800 exhibits can be seen.

A place to relax and enjoy the sun

“By choosing my field of study, I was able to move further within literature; it was more important to me than anything else, practically a way of life through which I could immerse myself in a novel by Flaubert or Virginia Woolf and truly live in it for a while. Literature was a kind of continent that I unconsciously contrasted with my social class. I could only understand writing as a transformation of reality,” said the French writer Annie Ernaux on the occasion of being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in December 2022.

The Library and Jules Verne come together again in 2000, when the metropolis of Amiens acquired the Gondolo della Riva collection, dedicated to the writer, his work and its reception in the world. This collection is kept in this building, consists of almost 20,000 documents and objects and mainly contains the letters that the publisher Jules Hetzel and Jules Verne sent each other, various handwritten pieces by the writer, such as his travel reports and personal objects, such as his writing box and his world map. This collection serves as the basis for the permanent exhibition of the Jules Verne House, where approximately 800 pieces can be seen.

The Musée de Picardie is an innovation for the 19th century. Built between 1855 and 1867, the building was the first in France designed specifically as a museum of fine arts and archaeology.

The stone circus Cirque Jules Verne is one of the seven stone circuses that France still has. It was initially a wooden circus built in 1875. In 1886, the city of Amiens made the decision to replace it with a stone circus. Construction started in 1887. Émile Ricquier, a student of Gustave Eiffel, led the works, and the circus was solemnly opened in June 1889. The name of the author Jules Verne, who was a councilor of Amiens at this time, was given to the circus. He occupied this seat for sixteen years (from 1888 to 1906) as a member of the Republican party, and was committed to education and theater.[1] Since then, many circus companies have performed here, including the Circus Barnum and Bailey and the Circus Annie Fratellini. But not only circus companies have used the complex, singers such as Ray Charles, Johnny Hallyday, Claude François and many other artists have also performed here. The circus also served as a backdrop for several films by well-known directors such as Federico Fellini and Nico Papatakis. The circus was closed for two years for extensive renovations and reopened in November 2003. Particular attention was paid to the dome to restore it to its original appearance.
