City of cars, everywhere even in the old town. Pedestrians can always wait to cross and bikes only get paint on the road... sometimes.

This church is located on the first stage of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques, just past Le Puy-en-Velay, on the way to Saint-Privat-d'Allier. The name of Saint Christopher, to whom the church is dedicated, translates as "Christ-bearer." According to legend, he was a giant man who carried people across a river. One day, a small child called to him, and he carried it on his shoulders to the other side. Amazingly, the child grew heavier and heavier, and he said he felt as if the weight of the whole world rested on his shoulders. Then the child revealed himself to him as Jesus Christ, Savior and Redeemer of the world.

For 9 euros (as of May 2023) you get an entrance ticket and an audio guide, which I can highly recommend. You get a mobile phone and headphones and depending on where you are, you get the appropriate explanations. Numerous languages are available. But these are not only sober explanations, but also living audio texts, so that you believe that the builder of this church is really talking to you when you climb the 268 steps. Also suitable medieval music. This makes visiting this extraordinary church a holistic experience.

Twisted bridge (14 s.) Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1926, the twisted bridge has spanned the Borne since the 14th century. Built in volcanic breccia, it measures 84 m and has six arches. The bridge piers are protected by slats that extend to the top of the parapet. Most are pointed, except those of the last two piers, rebuilt in 1820 following a devastating flood. The originality of the bridge lies in its layout, to which it owes its name. To guarantee its solidity, the builders of the Middle Ages ensured that the work always remained perpendicular to the current. The evolution of the axis of the bridge has therefore changed according to the displacement of the river bed.

Le Puy-en-Velay is quite an incredible city. Granite and lava stones are everywhere. Several religious buildings, such as the huge statue of Notre-Dame de France and the church of Saint Michel-d'Aiguilhe are placed almost 100 meters high on old volcanic chimneys. These buildings serve as landmarks and can be reached by taking stairs in the rock. The city has two specialties: the famous green lentils from Puy and lace. Lacemakers still practice this unique art. You will find them especially near the steps leading to Notre Dame Cathedral. Do not miss this visit. The church and its cloister are austere but the Romanesque architecture is magnified here. There is a beautiful atmosphere in the lively streets of Le Puy. Puy also means volcano.
