This old church, now a simple chapel, has been listed as a historical monument since 1982. While the current building dates back to the Romanesque period, architectural archaeology reveals even older origins. The single bell, dated 1591, is nevertheless one of the oldest in the department. On the apse, volcanic rock blocks have been found to be reused from Merovingian sarcophagi (between the 6th and mid-8th century). In April 2001, during drainage work, other fragments of similar sarcophagi had already been observed, as well as some Gallo-Roman tiles: the Roman road of Agrippa passes just a few meters from the building. Peirol the troubadour As with the exterior, Pierre Ganne presented the interior features, including the remarkable historiated capitals. More recent period furnishings are visible: the remains of two altarpieces dedicated to Saint Blaise and Our Lady of the Rosary, two wooden statues of Saint Martin (patron saint of the chapel), a baptismal font dating from before 1783, described by the Bishop of Clermont, François de Bonal. Next to the baptismal font, a reused Gallo-Roman millstone attests to the age of the place. Pierre Ganne concluded his visit with the story of Peirol, the famous troubadour from Auvergne, born in the village around 1160 and died in Montpellier around 1225. A troubadour at the court of the Dauphin of Auvergne, he sang of courtly love in his own compositions, notably to the Dauphin's sister. Some of Peirol's manuscripts still exist 800 years later.
