Puy de Dôme Summit

Summit of the Puys chain, the Puy de Dôme rises to 1,465 meters above sea level. It offers the best possible panorama of the entire chain, totaling nearly 80 puys! Today, on the summit of Puy de Dôme, there is a meteorological observatory. It is also a starting point for paragliding.

Puy Pariou Staircase

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A decent hike up Puy de Dome, the highest peak in the Monts Dome area of Auvergne at 1,465 Straight up from the car park up to the top and down the other side to do a bit of a loop. A good outing and I added a bit more to try and take a picture of the train which I didn’t get. Busy summit because of the train, route and cafe. Still an enjoyable day out!
Note: Ample car park at the start but get there early on weekends or in season.

Puy de la Vache

Highlight • Volcano

The Puy de la Vache has a crater due to a lava flow. This flow, with that of the Puy de Lassolas, constitutes the Cheire d'Aydat which created the lakes of Aydat and La Cassière by obstructing the Veyre. Its summit allows you to observe the Puys chain.

Lac Chambon Beach

Highlight • Lake

Lac Chambon is a lake of volcanic origin. Between its remarkable view of the Monts Dore and its shallow depth (only four meters), swimming becomes very pleasant.

As a good walker, you need an hour to hike around the lake. If you prefer water sports, go directly to the leisure base.

On the beach, taverns, ice cream parlors and restaurants are also open during the high season.

Temple construction in the 2nd century on the summit of the Puy de Dôme. The Temple of Mercury, built on the summit of the Puy de Dôme, was one of the largest mountain sanctuaries in Roman Gaul. It could be seen from a great distance, including from the city of Augustonemetum, present-day Clermont-Ferrand. The Via Agrippa, a highway from Lyon, the capital of Gaul, to Saintes on the Atlantic, allowed travelers to reach the shrine via the pilgrimage center at the Col de Ceyssat.

The Temple of Mercury on the Puy de Dôme is a Gallo-Roman temple built in the 2nd century on the summit of the Puy de Dôme to replace a 1st century temple. Excavations in 1875 and the early 20th century uncovered the ruins. In the 1st century, the Arverni decided to build a temple to Mercury in their city of Augustonemetum (now Clermont-Ferrand). In the following century, this temple in arkose, which had undoubtedly become too small to accommodate the many pilgrims who visited it, was replaced by a larger and more majestic temple in trachyte.
