Marmoutier Abbey is probably one of the oldest in Alsace. According to tradition, it was founded in 589 by the Irish monk Leonard on land donated by King Childebert II. The monastery then took the name of its founder: Leobardi Cella. Throughout its history, the abbey experienced alternating periods of decline and prosperity.
