The citadel was built in the second half of the 16th century and rebuilt in the 17th century by Jean Errard and later by Vauban. It contains elements of the old castle (11th and 13th centuries). On the city side, a crescent (by Vauban) protects the entrance and he also added a powder store and an arsenal. (Michelin)

A typical village with a rich history, mainly known for its fortifications and ramparts dating from the 13th and 16th centuries, it has become one of the main tourist attractions in the region and has received numerous labels. Montreuil is a village located in Pas-de-Calais, 30 km south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, 40 km north of Abbeville, 75 km west of Arras and 185 km north of Paris. Located on a promontory overlooking the Canche river, 10 km from Étaples where it flows into the English Channel6, Montreuil enjoys a privileged geographical position. The town is isolated from the neighboring plateaus by the valleys of Écuires and La Madelaine. This natural command position gives it an inevitable defensive vocation. Although located more than 10 km from the sea, Montreuil was for a long time a seaport of prime importance. The boats sailed on the Canche to the port, which today only allows the navigation of fishing boats and kayaks. This particularity explains the usual name of Montreuil-sur-Mer. It was even in 987 during the accession to the French throne of Hugues Capet, the only seaport of the royal domain. Historically belonging to Picardy, Montreuil was attached to the Pas-de-Calais department in 1790, then to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in 1972, and since January 1, 2016, to the Hauts-de-France region. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreuil_(Pas-de-Calais)
