Tips from the Community

Vince
September 16, 2025, Nécropole Nationale de Senlis

This necropolis contains the remains of soldiers killed during the major offensives of spring 1918. Created in June 1918, near the military hospital, this necropolis was developed until 1921 to gather the bodies of other soldiers initially buried in the temporary military cemeteries of Ognon, Gouvieux, Chantilly and Vineuil. In total, 1,146 French soldiers from the First World War are buried here. Two ossuaries preserve the mortal remains of 78 combatants. Alongside these men, 136 British soldiers are buried, mainly from the 15th and 34th Scottish Divisions, and two Russians. Four French soldiers who died during the Second World War are also buried here.

Beautiful road from Senlis to the Chaalis barracks Attention closed Tuesday/Thursday/Friday because it crosses an army shooting range

This highlight is part of a beautiful asphalted car-free road through the forest south of Senlis. However, this stretch of road of approximately 1.5 km in length is also part of a military training area / shooting range, so you cannot always cycle here!!! ⚠️ Closed on: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday!! ⚠️ On these days the area is cordoned off with barriers and you will have to cycle a small unpaved area via the west. This diversion is shown on the yellow warning sign on the south side of the site. Inconveniently enough, this sign is not on the north side of the site. See the photo I posted with this highlight. The path is publicly accessible all other days of the week and is very worthwhile! Along the way you will encounter a short steep climb from the north, but not too crazy. Highly recommended.

This oak, which is said to be around 350 years old, has kept track of the forces of nature! It was struck down in 1994. Examined in 2004 by an expert, it does not seem to present any particular fragility. Lightning can split a tree from the bottom up and usually it opens a doorway for parasitic fungi. Here, we surprisingly see a long white trail that it left as it passed along the trunk. All the details here: www.philippemorize.com/foret-de-pontarme,1109.html
