The greenway from St-Giron to Foix (which I always did in the direction Foix to St-Giron) is the most beautiful part of the greenway which in total goes to (almost) Boussens. It is a slightly hilly section with the most beautiful landscapes!

A very beautiful viaduct, it's a bit impressive and truly unusual on a greenway. The train used to go there, now the bikes go there!

Hello everyone, I'm from Ariège, I decided this year to do the greenway with my dog Emy in both directions. It's a very beautiful walk, however there are some black points: lack of stone benches to deter potential thieves, and on the other hand the large Rimont tunnel which is 803 m long there is no more light. The motion detector does not work. Luckily that day I had my flashlight with me. There is horse excrement everywhere, perhaps one day we will have to ask the riders to pick up their droppings. It's a very beautiful walk.

I am very disappointed, with all the places that there are in Ariège how can you propose a name mountain bike trail when there is only road including a place where cars drive at full speed. The landscape of lounbens is pleasant and that is the only positive point.

The Saint-Bauzeil area, located in the Ariège department, is ideal for exploring greenways, which are former railway lines converted into paths for cyclists and pedestrians. You can enjoy activities like cycling, walking, and running. For more specific routes, consider exploring the Gravel biking around Saint-Bauzeil guide or the Hiking around Saint-Bauzeil guide.
Yes, the region is rich in history. You can visit the impressive Château de Foix, a medieval castle about 13 km away. The nearby town of Pamiers, the largest in Ariège, also features several notable monuments including a cathedral. Further afield, the Saint Lizier Cathédrale is part of the French pilgrim routes, and the Église de la Sainte-Trinité and Grotte du Portel in Loubens are protected historical monuments.
The area is well-known for its greenways, which are perfect for cycling. Popular options include the Vernajoul Viaduct Greenway, offering scenic views, and the Foix–Saint-Girons Greenway, which follows an old rail line. Another highlight is the V81 Greenway Tunnels (Saint-Girons – Foix), known for its illuminated tunnels and shaded sections.
Many of the greenways are considered family-friendly, offering accessible paths with low slopes. The V81 Greenway Tunnels (Saint-Girons – Foix), for example, is highlighted as a family-friendly cycle way with illuminated tunnels, providing a varied and engaging landscape for all ages.
The Vernajoul Viaduct Greenway offers excellent views, particularly from the viaduct itself. The wider region is part of the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises, providing remarkable natural heritage. You can also explore the impressive Grotte de Lombrives, one of Europe's largest caves, located about 28 km south.
Visitors appreciate the scenic beauty and accessibility of the greenways. Many highlight the pleasant, often shaded routes and the unique experience of passing through illuminated tunnels on sections like the V81. The transformation of old railway lines into paths for cyclists and pedestrians is a popular feature, offering a unique way to explore the landscape.
Yes, Saint-Bauzeil serves as a good starting point for hiking. The region offers a variety of trails, from easy loops to more challenging routes. You can find detailed hiking options in the Hiking around Saint-Bauzeil guide, which includes routes like the 'Limouzy Peak loop from Loubens' and 'Pamiers loop from Pamiers'.
The Ariège region generally offers pleasant conditions for outdoor activities during spring, summer, and early autumn. These seasons provide comfortable temperatures for cycling, hiking, and exploring historical sites. The greenways, with their shaded sections, can be particularly enjoyable during warmer months.
Absolutely. Besides Foix and Pamiers, the bastide town of Mirepoix, about 25 km east, is renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval center. Montsegur, located southeast, features a Cathar castle with lovely, far-reaching views, offering a glimpse into the region's rich past.
Many outdoor trails and greenways in the Ariège region are dog-friendly, allowing you to enjoy walks with your canine companion. However, it's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature reserves or near livestock, and to check specific trail regulations before you go.
The greenways are designed to be accessible, featuring low slopes as they follow former railway lines. This makes them suitable for a wide range of users, including families with children, cyclists, and pedestrians. Some sections, like the V81, are well-maintained and often shaded, enhancing their accessibility and comfort.
While Saint-Bauzeil itself is a smaller commune, nearby towns like Pamiers and Foix offer a range of dining and accommodation options. You'll find local markets in towns like Pamiers (Tues & Sat) and Mirepoix (Thurs & Mon) for local produce. For specific amenities, it's best to check the offerings in these larger, neighboring centers.
