Fantastic scenary, but the walk is more a difficulty 2 rather than 1.

Photogenic little lake on the ascent to the famous peaks. From here, two trail options diverge. The one on the right, in the direction of ascent, isn't any more difficult, although it appears that way on the map.

Conveniently located hut for those who want to take the technically easiest, but with 2,000 meters of elevation gain, longest climb from the parking lot at L'Artigue to the peaks of Pic du Montcalm, Pica d'Estats, and Pic de Sotllo. The hut was already closed when I climbed in mid-October, but a winter room with approximately 14 beds was open. There's a cash register at the entrance, charging €8 per night.

"The house by the lake..." Beautifully situated hut on the ascent path from the L'Artigue parking lot to several peaks, including Pic du Montcalm and Pica d'Estats (I also included the somewhat more difficult Pic de Sotllo, hence my photos here as a "highlight" of mountain hiking). The hut was already out of service in October 2024, but there was a winter room with approximately 14 beds. A cash register awaits a deposit of €8 per night.

The path goes through a beautiful horsetail of singing waters and goes up to the outlet of the Romedo de Baix pond, which is raised with a stone wall to increase the capacity of the reservoir. Admirers of glacial modeling in high mountains can take advantage of and visit the cirques of the Guiló ponds. The route crosses the dam and follows the access lane for about two hundred metres, until a sharp curve where there is a small hut and markings for the mountain routes. The mountain crossing leaves the track and continues straight ahead along the shore of the lake, which offers a spectacular view on this slope. The trail has red and green paint dots and red and white chevrons. On a small rocky outcrop there is a rope for a channel to facilitate climbing. On the opposite side, the rope has disappeared, only the pegs remain, but it is lowered without complications. The path is well marked with the colors of the paths through an impeccable glacial valley to the shore of the Romedo de Dalt pond, completely natural, without artificial dams and a beautiful island decorating the mountain lagoon. In the same glacial basin are the Senó, Colatx and Punturri ponds. The red and white marks go up to the left of the Romedo de Dalt pond to the gap in the Sierra de Llurri, a spectacular pass between the peaks of the mountains of the Alto Pirineo Natural Park. The trail looks for the right descent to go down between the dizzying spurs of Llurri and connect with the path that goes up to the Certascán pond.

Pleasant pond in a cool place, perfect for a picnic (be careful not to leave your waste on site 😉)

For easy access, Lac de Bethmale is an excellent choice. It features a parking area a few hundred meters away and a wooden pontoon, making parts of the lake accessible for people with reduced mobility and strollers. An accessible path also encircles the lake, perfect for walks and picnics.
Yes, Étang d'Izourt, an artificial reservoir lake, holds historical significance. The GR®10 hiking trail, which passes by the lake, was used by those fleeing the Nazi regime during World War II. A commemorative plaque marks this history.
Both Étang du Garbet and Lac de Bethmale are popular for fishing. Étang du Garbet is a favorite among fishermen, while Lac de Bethmale is known for trout fishing, particularly brown and rainbow trout. A valid fishing license is required for Lac de Bethmale, with fishing permitted from May to October.
The area around Aulus-Les-Bains offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including a moderate route to Étang du Garbet and a difficult loop around Guzet Pond. Mountain biking is also popular, with challenging routes like the Pic de Risoul loop. For more strenuous adventures, there are mountain hikes such as the Pica d'Estats Summit loop.
Guzet Pond is considered family-friendly and is bordered by vegetation, making it an idyllic spot. Lac de Bethmale also offers a shaded and accessible path, perfect for walking and picnicking, with stone barbecues available at two entrances.
For exceptional views, Étang d'Arbu is highly recommended, offering clear water and stunning vistas. The cirque surrounding Étang du Garbet also provides magnificent views, including a cascade from the Étang Bleu. Additionally, the hike to Étang d'Izourt offers majestic views of peaks like Pique d'Endron and Picot.
While many lakes are beautiful, swimming and water sports are generally prohibited in some, such as Lac de Bethmale, to preserve their rich ecosystems. Always check local regulations for specific lakes before planning to swim.

Beyond the more well-known lakes, the region offers several smaller, peaceful ponds. The Senó, Colatx, and Punturri ponds are found in the same glacial basin as Estany de Romedo de Dalt, offering tranquil breaks amidst rocky valleys and mountain peaks.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. For instance, the Estany de Romedo de Dalt area is noted for its quiet and scenery, making hikers feel 'alone on the planet.' The clear, abundant water and exceptional views at Étang d'Arbu are also highly valued.
While specific recommendations vary by lake and altitude, summer is generally ideal for hiking in the Pyrénées, offering warmer weather and blooming rhododendrons, particularly along trails leading to lakes like Étang d'Izourt. However, some high-altitude refuges, like Pinet Refuge, may close by mid-October, though winter rooms might be available.
